Sanibel island (SW FL) Riding Question

I'm planning a trip to Ft. Meyers/Sanibel Island in early March and want to do some cycling while I'm there. I'll be, my wife, my 4 year old son and I going for about 4 days.

I'm hoping for a little 'local' advice on best place to rent (we're flying standby so bringing my ride isn't happening) and the best places to go.

I'm a very fit cyclist and can drag a trailer with my son or maybe do a 'trail-a-bike' for him. My wife will ride but she's definitely not avid like I am. That said, we do live in CO and the flat land of FL and the altitude advantage will go a long way for her. I'm pretty sure I could con her into an all day ride as long as we're seeing stuff and stopping often.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't have insight on bike rentals but there are 26mi of paved bike trails on the Island that run along the main road. I have not ridden there but stayed there a couple of times. The beaches are packed sand with a lot of shells (what they are known for) and there are a number of good resturants both in Sanibel and Captiva. I expect if you google you can find more info
The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard and the shallow end is much too large

Thanks for the info, I've checked Google and have an idea about where to start but thought there might be a local who has a great 'locals' route.

Well, there isn't really that many other "routes" to speak of on the islands, only 1 road really to get around. Everywhere on there is bike friendly, many of my friends will go out there to ride, since it is either bike lane, or wide wide path. Rentals are all pretty much beach cruisers, I think a few MTBs. Never seen any road bikes there for rent.

What size do you ride? I've got a decent collection (much to the chagrin of my girlfriend) going on, mostly older road bikes, few mtbs, if you wanted to get out and ride, I could make the drive out and bring a spare bike.

Here is a link to one local bike club if you're interested in a group ride. You can also search mapmyrides for local rides. There's a Trek store in Estero that might have road bikes for rent, but you have plenty local shops on Sanibel to rent rec bikes.

And make sure you go to the Bubble Room for dinner.

    Wow, thanks for the offer!
I'm on a 56 cm or Large depending on the frame builder, I did see a place online: http://www.billysrentals.com/bikes/h...ce-road-bikes/ they have some decent bikes for rent according to the website. I'll give them a try, if that doesn't pan out I'll PM you. thanks again

No problem, I extend a generosity towards forum members, we wouldn't be here if we didn't have some similarities. Maybe someday it'll come back around to me.
