Need some advice on my Tour de florida!

Hey BF Folks. Need a little help planning my cycling vacation itinerary. I will be taking a vacation starting March 12 through the 19th. I'm driving down to Wesley Chapel from New Jersey with my bike. It's just me and I'm pretty freaking stoked. I need to get away from this damn cold weather and thaw out. Anyways, this is what I've come up with. Now I'm giving myself about a 200 mile radius to drive to different locations. Here is what I have. Please advise on what would be better or which cycling routes I'm missing.

Staying in Wesley Chapel for a whole week.
  • Sunday Day 1 - San Antonio Ride
  • Monday Day 2 - St. Petersburg Ride
  • Tuesday Day 3 - Rest maybe? Go to a theme park?
  • Wednesday Day 4 - Clermont (Sugarloaf)
  • Thursday Day 5 - Need Help here BF Family?
  • Friday Day 6 - Need Help here BF Family?
  • Sat Day 7 - Driving back home.

Now these will not be 7 am rides. More like 10 am rides. So this is pretty much what I have . Please feel free to shuffle my days around as I'm still jotting everything down.

Also, I'm pretty good with hills and can average about 20-25 an hour. Hopefully this helps!!

Thanks folks!

Sunday Day 1 - San Antonio Ride or Sun Coast Trail
Monday Day 2 - St. Petersburg Ride (Pineallis Trail)
Tuesday Day 3 - Rest maybe? Go to a theme park?
Wednesday Day 4 - Withlacoochee Trail
Thursday Day 5 - West Orange Trail
Friday Day 6 - Clermont (Sugarloaf)
Sat Day 7 - Driving back home.

For the WOT and Clermont ride I would stay in Orlando cut out some of the driving

I agree with KJC on doing the Withlacochee Trail. Real nice, there will be about 1000 of us out there on the 19th doing the 'Clean Air Ride'. Suncoast Trail / Starkey Park Trail is a nice ride and directly west of Wesley Chapel on SR54 (park at Suncoast Parkway and SR54).

For a St. Pete ride I suggest Ft. Desoto and then a ride up the beaches from St. Pete to Clearwater and back (or the reverse). There is a bike lane the whole way from Clearwater Beach on Gulf Blvd. to the turn east on the Pinellas Bayway, then a very short ride to the south turn to Ft. Desoto. Pretty ride if you want to see the beaches.

Have fun and we will do our best to have good weather for you.

Mark

Oh, and there are lot of people riding out of San Antonio on Sundays. Everything from Pro 1/2 racers to recreational riders. Most park at the San Ann Athletic Complex at Railroad Ave and Oak St.

If you go to San Antonio on Sunday and don't have a group to ride with, be sure to get there by 8 am and be ready to hop on. After that, you'll likely get the casual riders at a much slower pace. Clermont should be fine on Weds since its a very rural area. You should include San Antonio a second (or third) time since there's several routes and its a great area to ride and close to Wesley Chapel.

Try to do the Clearwater Beach/bridge ride early too if possible since traffic gets heavy during the week.

If you're interested in doing the Suncoast Trail during the week, I'll likely be going after work, about 4pm. Probably do about 30 miles. Send me a pm if interested.

Thanks for the advice fellas.

FL_MarkD, the weather's looking great so far. I'm super excited.

FLvector, I was actually thinking of scratching out the clearwater ride. I think I might stick to this:
San Antonio (2 days of riding), Clermont Sugarloaf Area (2 days of riding), Withlacoochee, Sun Coast Trail, maybe West Orange trail. I'm also planning on sleeping pass 8.

If you want to do the Suncoast trail and looking for some small rollers, park at Anderson Snow park and go north to Rt. 98 and back - 36 miles. The trail south of Anderson Snow if very flat and a bit boring. There's only a few cross streets which makes this trail great to get some good training miles in.
