Tour de Cure 2011, Ft. Lauderdale, FL This Sunday!

I along with a few dozen others from my club have registered for the local TCD. I'm in for the 100 mi ride. Last year it was a real blast. I was in the front group, and we had a police escort the entire ride. We maintained a B pace, 18-22, and only stopped for rest stops. It really made doing a century a lot easier. We averaged just over 20 mph moving time.

Again this year after the event I'm hosting a BBQ at our house. We'll have 50 - 75 people, maybe more. I hope the weather is good. Our club just affiliated with zMotion, a huge local club with close to 1,000 members and affiliates. It could get out of hand....

Last year we were joined by the Austrian National Olympic Triathlon Team who was training in our town at the time. One of our club members is a Personal Trainer/Masseuse and was retained by the team to work on the athletes. She also does tri, so they invited her and her club to join them on some "base miles" rides. It was a real thrill for this old guy to ride with these young athletes. So we had them over to join us and we bid them farewell.

I will be doing the 100 mile also; god I hope the wind dies down by Sunday morning. Bob, which zMo group are you part of?

At this point it's not the wind to worry about. Winds should die down to about 6.

Just finished marking the northern end of the TDC route. Got 2/3 done and the clouds opened. Waited for an hr or so and the rain let up enought to allow us to put out the last of the signs. Unfortunately the roads are too wet for the route stickers they gave us. We bought some spray paint but I don't know if that will stick either.

Let's hope that the weather is better tomorrow for the ride. Supposed to clear up over night, be nice in the AM, and then cloud up and rain in the afternoon. Our post ride bbq may be in the house. :^(

The 2011 Broward TDC is now history. It was a fun ride, at least for the first 50 with the wind at our back. When we made the turn, we paid the piper. But that's ok, it didn't rain. That was my main concern.

I was hoping to do better that last year when we averaged over 20 mph (moving time) for the entire ride. But it was not to be. When we made the turn, the stronger riders pulled away into the wind as my HR soared toward 90%. Along with them when to police escort, so not we're not only fighting the head wind, but we also have to stop at all the lights. That really makes a difference.

I rode much of the last 35 miles solo, but I did finally hook up with a few other club members. They were going a little slower than I wanted but it was nice to have someone to pull once in a while. Despite the adverse wind conditions, we finished at 5:09 for the 101.8 mi, averaging 19.7 mph.

I got home about 2 PM. At 5, many of the club members came over for a BBQ. We all had a great time, and it didn't rain.

I got drop at the turn when I got stuck at the end of the pack and I could not make the jumps up to the front, oh well. I must say that it was frustrating not being able to see the markers for the turns, I guess I now know why with the troubles that you had the day before. The reason that it did not rain is because I carried my rain jacket in the back of my jersey. Who would have thought that something some lite and small could cause back pain just from the pressure that it placed on that area. If I did not bring it though I KNOW that the skies would have opened up on us.

Same here, I got dropped at the north end when they made the turn onto County Line Road. Part of the reason is that in the lead was a pack from zMotion, and those guys rode down from Pat's House in Parkland at 5AM. They were on the home stretch, and they had a nice long rest stop at the start.

I was able to catch them by taking a few short cuts, but I could only hang with them going west with a bit of a tail wind. When they turned south on to Coral Ridge drive, I got dropped again. :^( None the less, it was a good ride, and I had fun. Going 75 mi before a rest stop is not my favorite thing to do. I'm too old for that.

On behalf of the entire ride, I want to thank you for sacrificing yourself. Indeed had you not taken that preparatory step, we all would have gotten soaked! You are to be commended.
