Tysons Corner Questions

I'm from Florida. I'll be spending 5 out of the next 7 weeks in Tysons Corner for work. Does anyone know of any bicycle rental locations in the area? I am looking to rent a road bike.

Can anyone reccomend anywhere to ride? I'll be staying at the Embassy Suites on Leesburg Pike. I've done some running around that area and the traffic can get pretty heavy.

The airline I am flying charges 200 for a bike, so I am trying to find a cheaper way to ship my bike. I'm trying to explore all options.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
AJ

Why not have your LBS box your bike and ship it to a bike shop near where you'll be staying?

Check also in the Northeast forum as the DC metro/Northern Virginia area is split up. Local bike shops include Spokes, etc (Vienna location), Bikes @ Vienna (more 'bents, folders, and other unique rides). Don't know if they do any shop rides. I know Bike Lane's Reston Town Center store has shop rides. No idea if anyone rents road bikes. Performance Bikes has a shop in Tyosns (on Rt 7); they definitely do not rent anything. The local racer scene has a email list (search google groups for mabra) and someone there might have a bike to loan/rent. Some teams to check out include NCVC, Evolution. Rides - Reston Bike Club runs weeknight rides Tuesday (Reston) and Thursday (Herndon) and on weekends (see website). Potomac Pedalers Touring Club has a wealth of rides every weekend and some weekedays. Also check www.bikewashington.org for possible routes.

Tysons itself is an over-developed suburban traffic & construction hell-hole built by people who hate anyone not in a car and hate the car drivers, too (they don't want anyone to feel neglected). But just south of you in Vienna is the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) trail, which runs 10 miles east towards Arlington & DC and 34 miles west to Purcelville and some really nice roads in Loudoun County. If you score a bike and are determined to ride from the Embassy Suites, your options are either Gosnell Rd and work your way south (try to stay off 123/Chain Bridge/Maple Ave) to the W&OD. Or if there is a way to go west along 7 (the service road is gone but the parking lots may connect somehow) towards Westwood Center Dr & Ashgrove Lane. There is a pedestrian and bikeable paved path (visible on Google maps) connects the end of Ashgrove across some woods to a subdivision south of Tysons, you can then use side roads to work your way down past Old Courthouse Rd (I'd minimze my time on it) to the W&OD area. If you drive to the W&OD, there is plenty of parking along the trail in Vienna west of Church St. Spokes & Bikes@Vienna are just a few short blocks away. Have a good visit.

AJ, good luck with your visit. I commute into Tysons occasionally, but I come in from the W&OD and along Gallows, so it isn't absolutely horrible. I have to cross Rt 7 but I don't have to try to ride down it. I'm glad ks1g has better info on how to get around that area.

I'm pretty sure Spokes in Vienna rents bikes. They're right on the W&OD trail basically. Might be pretty expensive though.

A-1 in Herndon rents good demo bikes at $150 for three days. If you'll be up here for 5 to 7 weeks I'd ship your own bike up.

Other than the condition of Route 7/Leesburg Pike (lots of construction) getting from the Embassy Suites to W&OD should be pretty easy. Considering all the places that work trips can land you, you've ended up in a great one for biking. OK, it's not Portland but still pretty nice.

Link to W&OD:
http://www.wodfriends.org/

Embassy Suites to Spokes, Etc. (you'll see the W&OD in dark green on the google map).

If you are going to drive to a bike shop, rent and ride, Spokes might be a good choice. Close to your hotel and it's a couple of blocks from the W&OD (milepost 11.5)
Bike Lane in Reston is also just a couple of blocks from the trail (mp 18). If you wast ride out to Leesburg (mp34) you can get off the trail onto the county roads.
Oasis in Fairfax City also does rentals. Road riding instead of trails south of there.

If you are going to keep the bike at the hotel, you can get to the W&OD using backroads (Gosnell, Old courthouse, Fairway, Creek Crossing, Beulah, Church) or down Old Courthouse to Gallows. Going the other way, you can take International (other side of route 7) to Springhill Road. Once you are on the other side of the toll road you have a lot of choices of which way to go.

AJ, I don't know if you can send PM's with less than 50 posts, but try. If not reply here. I have a 56cm Madone 5.5 that is my backup bike. Unless my main bike is out of commission, you could borrow it for some or all of your visit.

Jim

Thanks for the offer! I couldn't send a PM. I'll be up there 10-20 April and then again 15 May - 3 Jun. I've pretty much decided to ship my bike up there for the May trip. I have been riding for a little over 2 years and my bikes have been both been 58s, an Allez and a Roubaix. Do you think a 56" would be OK? I'm going to call Oasis bikes and a couple other suggested shops tomorrow to see what they have available. According to their website they rent. I'm traveling to europe tomorrow for the week. Hopefully I'll be able to check BF. Thanks again for the offer.

Thanks everyone who took the time to answer. I appreciate all the info.

AJ

Hi AJ. Send me an email at 'j i m f e r g u s o n j @ y a h' etc. when you get in. At the very least I can give you some route pointers. Hopefully the weather will be a little more decent by then.

Well since it didn't happen, my trip was turned back on. However I am no longer staying where I was. Now I am staying at the Dulles Embassy Suites. 13341 Woodland Park Drive, Herndon, Virginia. Any suggestions about riding around there? Hopefully I'll be able to turn my bike reservation back on.

Thanks

Bike rental turned back on. Looks like I'm not too far from the W&OD. Google map bike routes looks a little sketchy. We'll see.

Not a bad location.
Centerville Road is iffy. Better to take Sunrise Valley east to Monroe, then under the access road and continue on Van Buren to the trail. Or continue to the Fairfax County Parkway and take the sidepath.
Have fun.

I work just the other side of Centreville Rd from that hotel and do some bike commuting in the summer. You definitely want to use Sunrise > Monroe > Van Buren to get to the W&OD (and it's actually an overpass over the Dulles Access Rd (Rt 267)). Centreville Rd has virtually no space when going underneath of the access road; I hate driving my car in the far right lane much less riding a bike.

And you've got Finnegan's or Ned Devine's for your post ride beers.

Thanks for the advice. I learned about centreville the hard way. Tuesday evening Tom from Get Out & Go Tours brought the bike to the Hotel. He waited while I changed into my kit and then drove me to the W&OD. I went for a short ride to the west on the trail and then turned around. To make a long story short I got a little turned around and after multiple consultations with my phone / GPS got I finally got on Elden St/Centreville Rd headed in the right direction...in the dark. Luckily I brought a head lamp and Planet Bike Super Flash just in case. My sense of direction here sucks. I'm so used to the roads in Fl running N-S and E-W that I make wrong turns. At least tonight I made it back to the hotel before dark. Sunrise > Monroe > Van Buren is definitely the way to go. Thanks again for the good advice.

Happy Reunion

A little too funny that I would happen across this long thread, dismayed that there was so much difficulty finding a place to rent a bike in Northern Virginia, knowing I had the answer, then get to the bottom of the thread and find out that you found us after all! I remember the whole episode (except you getting disoriented after that first ride). Thank you for the rental, and for the winter months, we include lights, if requested.

Tom, Get Out & Go Tours, LLC.
