Upper Tampa Bay Trail Crime Alert

http://www2.tbo.com/news/health-4-yo...red-ar-351511/

I ride out there a couple times a month. I didnít realize this was such a bad crime area.

It puts in perspective something that happened to me a couple of months ago. I had just finished my ride and was loading my bike up in the parking area when I notice a young man from across the street stand up and walk towards me. He kind of did this slow semi circle around the back of my car trying to stay out of my line of sight. I canít put my finger on it exactly, but my mental alarm system went off. I had the distinct feeling he was sizing me up. I quickly closed up the back of my SUV and wheeled around to make him aware I saw him. Fortunately, nothing happened and he walked off. It could have been my imagination, butÖ

What trailhead were you at? Anyone lurking or coming up to me to talk without a bicycle is a red flag in my world.

This is interesting as I ride this trail - a lot! I've ridden well over 2,500 miles on this trail in the last year and haven't had any issues. But then again, I'm a 56 year old, 200+ lb. man; so, maybe I don't seem like an easy target.

It's the far south parking area, near the high school, that's on the bend of Memorial Hwy. I'm not sure if it has a specific name.

That's the Montague trailhead. I live about 1.5 miles west of there and use that as my main access to the trail. I sometimes see kids that I assume are from the H.S. hang around there but I've never seen any trouble. Of course, that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

The incident I mention above was the only time I felt something wasn't right. However, I was there on a rare weekday and the trail was fairly deserted. Most of the time I'm out on weekend mornings and the trail is full of other users.

Isn't that story about the Peterson Park Trailhead area? There is a high school close to that park too.

Does this story not seem a bit alarmist to anyone else?
The lead out of the story is some lady who got scared by what may or may not have been a toy gun (or even a gun at all). The kid did nothing else and she went on her way, unharmed. The only other thing they list as happening specifically on the trail this year is a robbery and don't mention that it was a cyclist (unless I missed it). The rest of the stats could be anything, from anywhere. 1600 crimes reported within so far of the trail. Does it ride by a bad part of town? Dope street?

I certainly suggest being careful out there, and a heads up where warranted is nothing but good. Creating a problem where there isn't one just goes to increase worry.

Why was this thread resurrected? It's 1-1/2 years old.

Glad I live up here in the hinterlands. I see the sheriff or park ranger on the trails just about every day.

Personally my motto is better safe than sorry. The Peterson Park Trailhead is the farthest one from all the others. And all by itself for sure. Even the Memorial trailhead has seen shady characters hanging out at it. I'll stick with the Channel Park Trailhead to start my ride. I wouldn't be a fan of being attacked from behind just because I don't want to believe what is reported about the Upper Tampa Bay Trail. But that's me. Tampa is a big city. And a dangerous city.

I ride it all the time too and never had problems except for some punk kids that shot me from a tree with an airsoft gun. I felt it bounce off the back of my jersey up by my neck. Needless to say I've been looking out for them since. There's just a lot of punk kids in that area in general.
