Love Bugs invade Florida and they taste...

pretty awful. Had a pair fly into my mouth yesterday. Luckily, spit them out almost immediately. Wonder how much protein in a love bug? I used to fish offshore about 5 miles and they would swarm the boat. Amazing!

I know they are pretty bad this year..... I think it is the worst I have seen them in the last 6 or 7 years (in my area anyway). Went to Gainesville last week (about 35 miles from here), got to town and had to buy something to clean them off of the windshield before I could drive back home. Got home and had to clean them off again. I don't think I have actually tasted one while out riding yet (knock on wood). But as bad as they smell when you clean them off your car, I bet they taste even worse... ahhhh.... Last Sunday they were pretty heavy at the parking lot to the trail... but out on the trail they weren't bad at all..... Hope its the same way tomorrow....

They remind me sometimes, when they are really thick and I'm riding through the swarm, of old WW2 Air War movies.

They can be like clouds of "flack" anti-aircraft ordinance.

My inner Walter Mitty...

That's one of the few things I don't miss about FL.
We have plenty of mosquitos here. I went out in the yard for 5 minutes to move the sprinkler and had two BIG bites on my leg when I got back in the house.
Luckily they don't bother me when I riding. I guess they can't fly that fast.

I thought the same thing once... about them not flying that fast while riding.... And then..... I got a flat on the Gainesville Hawthorne trail .... they swarmed me while fixing it..

was wondering how the ride went yesterday. I am planning on next year at least doing the 30 mile portion. I was on my way to grocery yesterday and stopped as several groups went by me. Looks like they had lots of riders this year. Hope it went well. I thought we were done with the love bugs but went south on Friday to visit my mom in Leesburg and had them all over my car. They didn't seem as bad where we were but it seems like they are in clumps in some areas.

Had one get behind my glasses on Saturday. Nothing better that having something trapped between your glasses and your eyes Stopped, took my glasses off and away he went.

Not so much trouble with mosquitoes but had a bee get me as we passed the orange groves last year. Stung me just above the saddle. Talk about a pain in the butt.

Ride in the woods yesterday was full of biting flies.... The red ones, yellow ones and the black ones.... Was NO fun swatting at flies while trying to ride in sand.. They weren't so bad when we got back to the pavement...

The ride was great! I believe they had close to 300 riders. Lots of folks decked out with Ocala Bike Shop jerseys - I tried to get one last week, but all they had left were medium and small - not even close to fitting me. Asked Dan to reserve an XL for me when the new ones come in.

I was impressed with the organization - great food, teriffic support from the police keeping the cars stopped at intersections and well marked routes. I rode the Ride to Remember out of Flemington on Saturday and was really disapointed with the support. NEVER saw a sag vehicle, not much selection on snacks - only good thing was a nice t-shirt.

Linda, looking forward to seeing you at next year's ride - perhaps we can ride together.

Sue

What ride was this? I just came back from Ormond Beach yesterday (Sunday) and the love bugs were horrendous. In fact, they have been heavy all week. If I had known about a ride on Saturday then I would have been there.

Two rides this past weekend. Saturday, The Ride to Remember for Alachua County Alzheimers Alz Place sponsored by Gainesville Cycling Club. Similar route to the Horse Farm hundred. Rides of 100,50 and two different 25 mile routes.

Sunday was the Frank Polack Hospice Ride out of Ocala. Lots of sponsors including Ocala Bicycle Center. Rides of 29, 60 and 80 miles. I probably should have posted them.

I'm usually pretty adept at finding these events but I guess I missed these. If you know of any events over July 4th week then please post them. Otherwise, it'll be the local routes while I try to avoid frying in the sun.
