Considering a move to Kentucky Lake

Just spent a few days down there on vacation with the wife's family. We talked about looking for lakefront property in the area.

Anyone live there? Plusses? Minuses? Real estate tax rates? Homeowners insurance rates?

KY or TN? That's a big one right there.

Is there anyone running around wearing a hockey mask in the summer?

Information welcomed. If we go this route it will be in the next couple of years. Not this summer, but maybe next summer.

Grew up just west of there, on the Kentucky side of the border.

Personally, I would look in Calloway County first if I were shopping for a place, just because Murray is close and a decent college town.

Healthy cycling crowd in Calloway and McCracken counties with Bike World in Paducah and Wood n Wave at Grand Rivers. Mountain biking pretty big around Grand Rivers with great single track at LBL.

Well, it's time to resurrect this thread - my wife and I just bought a house on Lake Barkley in Cadiz.

I expect we'll close sometime early-to-mid November but we won't be there full time for a while. Two homes to sell in northern IL and a step-daughter that needs to graduate from high school before we actually move.

Are there any road bike folks in Cadiz or thereabouts that would be able to talk about living in the area? Doctors, banks, lawyers, groceries, auto/truck service, bicycle shops, motorcycle shops, landscaping, etc. will all have to be figured out.

Please send a PM if you would be willing to help out.

Thanks in advance.

Nobody? Oh, well - I don't know how much traffic these regional threads get.

Closing is now set for early December. I will probably stay at the new house for the week after closing so that I can get utilities switched over, the security system switched, and phone lines / internet switched.

There's so much fun stuff you get to do when you move.

I was just out there this past weekend. We relo to a Clarksville for two years. You are in a lovely area. I hope you have great riding.
I am at a loss where to ride in clarksville. The roads, twist, turn and seem to have no edge:( i hopped on my bike today, got on the main road and realized how fast my riding days would be over on the busy road. Perhaps I was just spoiled in Mi.

I echo this. I was born in Murray, grew up near there in TN and came back to MSU for college and lived there for 2-3 years after. Murray's one of the nicest and best small towns in America -- bar none, I think. And you'll get a nice mixture of demographics, activities available and other advantages in addition to having LBL, Kentucky Lake, etc. near you for recreational purposes.

Live in Paducah and both shops (Wood n Wave and Bike World) are both great to deal with. I don't have a bike at the current time, but I am looking at getting back into it. I really enjoyed it when I was riding and it is the best I've ever felt.

Closing is delayed a little, hopefully will still be in 2013 - maybe towards the end of December. My wife and I were in Cadiz checking out the inspector's report and did some driving around to familiarize ourselves with the area. Didn't see any roadies, but did see some dogs out and about. Do you normally have pepper spray with you on road rides, or not?

I might be spoiled because the routes I ride up here in IL don't have loose dogs. The cagers are actually pretty courteous too. Hopefully the same will be true once we're relocated to Cadiz.

Are there any roadies in the Cadiz area that would be able to show a new resident some good rides?

It's a done deal. We closed on the Cadiz - Lake Barkley house on Friday the 21st. Posession is two weeks after closing, so we'll be down there for seven days starting March 7th.

Any suggestions for rides from a resident to a brand-new resident?

Any luck finding good rides in Clarksville/Cadiz area? I'm going to be in Clarksville for a couple weeks on biz and I am bringing my steed. 20-40 miles on a good windy county highway WITH paved shoulders are ideal. Hills are heavenly.

Didn't get much time to look around for rides while we were there last time. Maybe more this time - I'm heading down there on Sunday the 30th for at least two weeks. I'm bringing a bike this time. 274 loks decent, but that's from driving, not because I've ridden it.

I'm in town now too and hoping it dries up tomorrow or Friday! Are you talking about 374? It does look good, I was checking it out on GoogleMaps last week. It's busy and mostly flat, but with a nice wide paved shoulders. Probably great for time trialing, but will do for a couple 20-40 mile rides this weekend. I'm going to try a short ride tomorrow or Friday from Wilma Rudolph down to the Little West Fork Red River. I'll let you know how it goes.
