Biloxi/Gulf Coast area

How is the riding scene in Biloxi, MS and the Gulf Coast Area? I am going to be there for a school from Oct-Dec this year and wondering if it's worth bringing my bike. Any info/advice anyone has concerning weather, good routes, does traffic try to run you off the road, etc would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We have a pretty good club down here. www.gulfcoastbicycleclub.com All in all I'd say most drivers are at least reasonably courteous but like everywhere we have our folks who aren't. In October you'll have the best weather we get - highs in the 70's to low 80's typically and a little lower humidity. December can get a bit rainy and we'll get a good cold snap or two with lows into the lower 30's but it only last a day or two. The club has a century ride coming up in October, the 13th. It's a good ride with 5 distance options. Check it out www.southernmagnolia100.com

Riding here is flat. Flat. Flat. Flat. Did I mention that riding here is flat? Example that century ride has less than 2,000 feet of climbing for the whole thing. You'll want to stay off the beach/Hwy 90 in Biloxi/Gulfport but in other parts of the coast it is ok. Check out the club site for some routes and rides. Glad to answer any questions - just PM or post.

C.

Thank you for the info. I'm hoping to do the ride on the 13th but won't register until I get there and know what my schedule is like. Flat roads will certainly be strange to me coming from Colorado. I think I may enjoy that for a little while.

Yeah - you'll find this a bit different than CO for sure. Just FYI the humidity down here will still be 70% - 80% even then which I suspect you'll also find a bit different. Shout if there's anything I can do to help. The club also has a facebook page - maybe a little easier to keep up with who's riding when on there. One good thing here is that we'll get highs in the 50/60's even in Jan and Feb unless we get a really strong cold front so it's easy to ride all through winter. NO SNOW at all.

I lived in Biloxi 12 years or so and left just before the hurricane - lucky me. I liked the area, the climate (once I got used to the heat and humidity) and the people a lot. At that time I did not cycle but even then I liked the many quiet back roads. Looking back, those back roads would be fine cycling terrain. I miss the place.
