Found a GREAT ROUTE from the north Trailhead to the new extension. Ride south on the Withlacoochee Trail from the (North) trailhead to Citrus Springs Blvd. Go east, crossing US41 and continue to CR39. Go north about 3/4 mile to the extension trailhead on the right. A loop from Gulf Junction to the end of the extension and return on this route is 13+ miles. Low traffic on both these roads and nice scenery.

The trailhead is on Highway 39. 39 is right across from the Sunoco Gas Station 11520 North Florida Avenue (aka Highway 41). Here is my video on the entrance:

We rode this yesterday. Not a long trail but beautiful. We ended up riding into Dunnellon for breakfast and then rode back to the trailhead near the ball field. If anyone is coming from the Ocala area you would take Bridge Road (dirt) off of 484 before you get to the bridge that crosses the Rainbow River. That puts you at the eastern most part of the trail. Unfortunately they do not have any signs in place for this one.

There are two articles in today's (19 April 2014) Citrus County Chronicle about the trail and planning for the connector from Gulf Junction to the Dunnellon trail. You can read them here: ChronicleOnline.com

Thanks for the update. I love this new trail but look forward to the expansion to make it even nicer.

Well it looks like the finishing touches are being done this week. There was word of the office ribbon cutting this Friday (May 16, 2014). However, I can't find anything in print yet. We have been finishing our daily ride here as it is a great way to cool down. Today, Monday, May 12, workers were placing a couple of benches and trash cans. Plus they finally put signage at both trail heads. I talked briefly with what appeared to be the head worker bee about possible picnic tables at the Dunnellon trailhead. He was going to look into it as many times we have been there around noon riders and walkers are siting on the rocks eating. At least there is now a trash can for waste.
