It's Florida.
In the three horrific years I lived there, I had a home invasion and few bad things happen on my bike.
I learned to carry weapons, when you hear "HEY, THATS MY BIKE", ride away like your life depends on it, cuz it does,
and giving hand signals will summon people seemingly out of nowhere who will ask "wutchoo need?" :)

Moved from Commuting.

Ride somewhere else???? How about the police step up their patrolling of the area and make it safe. Are we to accept that we are to turn over trails, paths, streets to thugs?

Obviously you lived in the wrong part of Florida.

re: "St. Petersburg Police are telling people to be aware of their surroundings and not to ride anywhere where they don't feel safe and say they continue to investigate the Saturday robberies.

"We generally find that when people are made aware of these situations and take the proper precautions, they generally come out OK," said police spokesman Mike Puetz."

those cops are PUTZ

too bad vigilantes are discouraged ... clearly protecting the citizens is being discouraged by PUTZ cops

I don’t ride the Pinellas trail too much, but I was on this section several times last year during late summer. It is a fairly peaceful stretch, nothing that would particularly suggest a problem. Unfortunately, this kind of crap happens everywhere these days in the Gunshine state. Not that it was all that bad advice from the police, but came across as a pretty weak response to the attack.

St. Petersburg's property and violent crime rates have historically been high compared to the rest of the state and the nation:
