Move to New Orleans
I am to that point in life I am thing about retirement. I want to move south first and work a few years before I retire and kinda settle in before I retire. New Orleans is one area I am seriously looking at. I know I can transfer my employment without difficulty. Does anyone who lives there have any opinions? For example, how is bicycling in that town? Is crime in the city completely outrageous? And anything else you might like to tell someone thinking of moving to NO. Thanks.

You eat to overcome to humidity (which means lots). Plus lots of great food in the town anyway. :)
But I only visit, I've never lived there. |
I hear the humidity is a killer. Worst than where I live -- Florida. But it isn't too bad in my area. Hot but bearable. No crime, 46 mile paved bike trail, and a 41 mile paved bike trail a short drive from here.

You'll survive ;)

Ask the folks in the 50+ forum. Seems like I remember one or two BFers from that area.

You will have deal with humidity and the possibility of hurricanes and tropical storms,
It is so nice not to deal with the extreme cold and snow. |
It took me about 8 years to full acclimate to Florida. I just started biking again and while it is hot and humid, it doesn't bother me that much. The best time to move south is winter so you can help your body acclimate for a few months.

I lived most of my life in NO; talk to @JoeyBike. No one know more about cycling there than he does. I loved the city and the food. You probably couldn't pay me enough money to move back there though (or at least no one is trying, :). You can ride year around (which is way cool) but I don't like hot summers and I don't like the lack of hills and I don't like the crime. You'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful city to live in though.

Assuming you already have street smarts, I would say the only drawback to retiring here is the occasional hurricane evacuation. It can be really hard on the elderly. Most native New Orleaneans over the age of 30 personally knows some old timer that died or became terminally ill during an evacuation. I don't know what my limit will be, but looking around me I don't think past 80 I would want to deal with all of that. And if you become frail or partly incapacitated, you just can't stay and hope to survive tropical conditions for a week or two without electricity.
Otherwise, the heat/humidity is indescribable mid July thru mid September. One person I heard refer to it as "Africa Hot" and although I have never been to Africa, I think the description says a lot. I was born here, left many times, keep coming back. NOLA is a smallish cosmopolitan city with every type of person represented and likely the most FREEDOM of being who you are no matter what that may be than any other American city aside from NYC and San Francisco. I have extensive travel experience - ground level on a touring bicycle - in the USA and find most of this country pretty boring across the board. NOLA can be called a lot of things but I don't think anyone has ever called it boring. |
Who Dat! Born and raised in NOLA. I have since relocated and live in Tampa. I love it in Florida, but New Orleans will always be my home. Crime? Same as any other major city.... But nothing to really worry about.

sorry to revive an old thread but I ended up in Augusta Ga. I have been here about a week, have rode all over town. Very nice town.

I grew up in Augusta. It can be a very nice town.
What's your neighborhood? Is Andy still selling bikes on 13th St? |
