How are the towns surrounding Savannah, GA for bike commuting?

Generally pretty lousy. Not a lot of thought has been given by GDOT to non-motorized transportation. US 17 is a corridor that has some lanes. A commute from Richmond Hill to Savannah wouldn't be too bad. A commute from Pooler maybe possible but I can't imagine a commute from Garden City or Port Wentworth. I see touring riders on US 17 over the border in SC but that looks pretty suicidal to me. Your stomach may be stronger than mine.
