Ft Payne AL Area Questions

I am going to be vacationing in Mentone in July and want to ride a loop from Mentone to Ft Payne and back. Drop off the mountain on 117, pick up 137 to Ft Payne, then up the mountain on 35 to 89/Desoto Parkway then back to Mentone. I have spent quite a bit of time in the area, so I know what I am getting into as far as the terrain goes. But that was some time ago. I am more interested in how traffic/safety would be and whether bicyclist are common and treated well in the area. If you are familiar with the area, would you do that loop?

I wish I could help you out more, but I've only driven in the area taking my daughter to summer camp for several years in Mentone. The traffic on 117 never inspired me to get on a bike, although the views are outstanding. Going down the mountain may not be as bad, but I don't think I'd climb it. It appears you have alternate routes chosen back into town, and I would concur - although I haven't driven them enough to be of any help.

The AL Rando's had a ride called the Mountain Music 200k up in that area, but a web search didn't yield much. There may be a posted GPS route available.

117 doesn't thrill me, but we will only be on it for a short downhill stretch.
