The California Bicycle Coalition is pursuing a bicycle-oriented special interest license plate program for motor vehicles in California. License plate programs can make millions of dollars for programs that can help get thousands more people to ride bikes
EVERYONE is invited to Complete a Survey to express your opinion about this proposal.
Here's some more information:
To implement the program, 7,500 plates must be pre-ordered within 12 months. If the pre-order quota is not fulfilled, all dollars will be returned.
The DMV Website has examples of current California specialty license plates.
The survey isn't about expressing your opinion; it assumes you've already decided to support this specialty license plate idea. I'll be a curmegeon and say its not a good idea at all. There are already too many specialty plates and some even look like plates from other states, the best example being the Washington (state) plate with Mt. Rainier on it looking like California's Yosemite or 'Whale's Tail' plates. Some are also hard to read. Kind of makes it confusing to police officers and others (witnesses to a bicycle hit-and run?) from reading and identifying a license plate
In Oregon we have one of those lame plates. Ours has the almost-always misunderstood "share the road" motto on it. When we were illegally passed by a car bearing such a plate yesterday morning, my wife said, "If I ever get a car and put one of those on it, just shoot me because I'm already gone."
