    Solo Riding SART

Id like to get more riding time during the week other than my normal weekend group rides. How is riding the SART starting at Green River? Is it safe to park my car, are there toilets somewhere on the trail in case I have to go, is it safe (read on another thread that there have been midday bike jackings in the past)?

I've never had a problem on SART. Seen some shady characters, but mostly in the actual parks that are along the trail. I'd park at Starbuck's, because I have seen broken windows in the parking areas near the trail. There's really nothing around there, so gives free reign to thieves. The Starbuck's parking lot is pretty busy all the time.

There are restrooms along the way. I think you can usually find one within any 3-5 mile stretch. Some are in the parks, and there are also port-a-johns along the way. I think the longest stretch without one is from Anaheim to Newport Beach (about 10 miles).

I ride the trial from time to time and never had problems. I never worry about restrooms, because it's a fairly short trial.

We used to park near the end Green River Road (close to the Golf Course Entrance). It's a little over 30 miles to the beach from there.

I haven't had any problem, but someone tried to get in my buddies truck once (rammed something into the key hole and failed). I have also seen some traces of broken glass in that area as Snidely mentioned.

I mainly go on the weekends, so there are usually people around to deter the low-lifes.

There is a bunch of freeway construction going on there right now, so I would agree that parking at the Starbucks or the office building just north [west?] of there is probably your best bet.

There is also a retail center on East La Palma (just north [west?] of Gypsum Canyon Road) where you can park and pick up the trail there.

Actually some time back I started parking at Brush Canyon Community Park. Very safe. Very quiet. There is a nice restroom to use and just a half mile connecting to SART. I have had too many friends have their car vandalized to park at Green River anyway. If you have too, park near Starbucks....

My neighbor and I ride the SART every Saturday and Tuesday, we're 60-ish but like a decent 40 mile ride or longer. Never an issue on the SART. Stop and talk to some of the homeless folks as well, generally pretty friendly folks and certainly not hostile, and often entertaining. Restrooms are frequent enough along the length and several places within a block of the SART to resupply if need water or Gatorade etc.
    Cheers,

I ride the upper part of lower sart all the time, and at night and have yet to have any problems at all. (I ride to the trail from Brea and I'm usually starting at Lakeview or Tustin and going to GR and back)

There are restrooms at Yorba Regional Park, there's a port a potty just south of the Imperial bridge, another restroom right before the cross-over at Angel Stadium, Edna park has one (and a nice bottle refill station too).

I have heard stories about bike muggings in Santa Ana, but nothing recent.

How far away from the start do you live? Just ride there.

Like others mentioned above, riding the SART is safe, some of the areas off of it are not. The criminal activity/'bike-jackings' a few years ago happened on a 3-mile(?) stretch in Santa Ana between 17th street (where the propane yard is) south to about Centential Park (where the soccer fields are next to the SART) where it runs through some heavy-duty gang turf; the Santa Ana Police Dept took care of the problem (yea!), so you shouldn't have any issues. There are lots of people on it on teh weekends, and lots of maintenancea ctivities during the week, so iff you've already developed theh habit of being vigilant of your surrounds while on a bike (cars, errant pedestrians, etc), and keep up on the SART, you'll be fine.
    Are we having fun yet?

You have the boundaries of the problem area spot on. I've ridden below Edna park several times in the last 2 weeks. I did encounter sketchy juveniles during school hours. Once I had to yield to a S.A PD cruiser and motor officer that entered the trail to investigate some recent tagging.

If you see kids that should be in school and they are walking on the trail with swagger, don't be surprised if they do some stupid things like reach for their waist bands (as a bluff) as they turn and face you.

As for riding in areas bordering the SART, I do this on Tuesdays and Saturdays to avoid the the Safety Team Gauntlet.
