LA River entrance closed at Victory

LA River Bike Path Temporary Closure in Glendale.

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Closure of a one-mile segment of the Los Angeles River Bike Path.

WHERE: The Los Angeles River Bike Path between Riverside Drive and just south of the SR-134 overcrossing in the city of Glendale.

WHEN: Late September 2015 to fall 2017. This closure will be in place 24/7.

WHY: The bike path in this area passes through an active freeway construction zone where bridge widening is underway. The closure is a safety measure to protect bike path users.

DETOUR: A signed detour is posted that directs bike path users to Zoo Drive and Western Heritage Way.

This $116 million project is adding 2.7 miles of carpool lanes in each direction to the freeway.

Isn't there going to be a plan to spend like 1 billion to revitalize the Los Angeles River? That includes the bike path and making the river a "place to be". Trouble is the adjacent neighborhoods.

That detour route over the I5 and onto Western Heritage Way gets really backed up from Zoo traffic on the weekends. I hope there's some safety measures implemented for cyclists.

Keep hoping. Every other detour for cyclists around LA/OC has been a nightmare and of course, you know it'll be closed for 4 years or so because nothing takes time like a Caltrans project. Sigh.

TH covers it good and I have 3 titanium friends in my left femur for proof. Dealing with detours will be a challenge and occasionally you will be operating `out-of-box`, but keep the creativity in check.

If you need to contact directly someone that can fix a problem on the bike path there, this guy is top on the list

in the margin is a link to the LA County site for bikes. They can roll a sweeper, clear brush off the path shoulder, or get big cracks sealed.

Maybe Park Rangers and LA City PW can help too.

I think that part of this detour retraces the route taken by Damian Kevitt when he was run over by a car that dragged him onto the 5 freeway. He lost a leg, broke 20 bones and nearly died.

BE CAREFUL!

That left turn over the 5fwy is a bit dangerous. There are divider sticks up and a lot of debris on the road. Not as much room for cars to pass on that stretch, with cars trying to speed up and merge onto the 5S onramp.
The rest of that detour has bike lanes for the most part.

It was great finding this out when I got to the exit on my way home from work. Had to turn around and go back to the nearest exit.

Ran across this the other day. Entrance closed and a fence is up blocking the path by the dog park but then there are side gates that are open. Of course since there is not useful detour sings, I thought the side gate being open was the detour...nope, almost ran into a truck blocking the path

And to add to the confusion about the closure, the gates between Zoo Dr and Victory were open yesterday morning and I rode through there for my morning spin. There was some construction supplies under the freeway and the homeless encampments were still there.

Yup that's what happened to me and got met by some aggravated city workers...who seemed pissed off that several people tried to ride through. Probably should lock the gates and put up signs that make sense

Good news. The victory gate was open and the whole LA River Trail was rideable.

The construction debris was off to the side under the overpass. At least for the weekend.
