Route advice
I am going to be riding from Irvine to Santa Barbara at the end of the month and I would like some route advise. I am going to do it over 4 days so I can enjoy the sights along the way. I know the route for Irvine to San Pedro, but the other 3 days I do not know and some of the directions look like they may be putting me on freeways. I would like to stay as close to the coast as possible.
Are the route safe?
Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestion you may have,
David

OK, for starters, you're going the wrong way. Any reason you have to ride north? You will experience prevailing headwinds that way. if you can flip your route then... check out @calamarichris recent trip from Santa Barbara to Carlsbad.

His approximate route is linked in that post, which should help you out quite a bit.
By the way, when you're mapping in google maps, you can click on the "by bicycle" icon that will put you on theoretically bike friendly roads. I can't tell if you did that. ridewithgps.com is a more friendly mapping site for bike routes. Lastly, strava global heat maps (https://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#6/-1...6000/blue/bike) are a great resource to see where cyclists are riding.

+`1 to what TH said. In addition to the wind, it's also preferable to ride on the ocean side of PCH. It's generally wider, it's upwind of the tailpipes, and the view is much better with fewer texting SUVs making right turns into you.
Take the train North and ride South. Even my many pictures and meticulous notes don't do it justice. It will make you patriotic about California. Oh you're from Washington... well, enjoy your stay here and I apologize for the few rude drivers you encounter on the ride.
Here are some pics from our ride earlier this year. The Southbound route is always ALWAYS best.
Except in San Pedro (the little piece of Texas that ended here in California.)
