I am sorry that I have been vacant the past couple days, woke up on Sunday feeling horrible, (mostly because I dreaded being left in the dust by Pico and OC Roadie!) and then I've had to be at work for about 12 hours per day...

8:30 AM start at Tustin Market Place (easy for everyone to find) on Jan. 15 and I'll send the map to anyone that wants it. I'll also have route slips.
Hey Extort,

Where about at the TMP, is there a store you all want to meet in front of?

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no way! NO WAY! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i got us all signed up for BA, too! i was getting so stressed out cuz we were having computer/network issues at work.. and i just knew the 300 slots were gonna sell out before we got our 2! phew!

i need sooooooooooooooooooooooo much work before the "king of the mountain" rides come up! i've been such a slug the last couple of months! eating poorly not climbing... heck.. not even putting in the miles i put in all summer/spring/last winter!!!!!

Oh, and I decided on a near-impossible target today. If I can climb Baldy in 2006 in 90 minutes (OC Roadie's current time), I'll let myself buy a bike set up just for big climbs. My primary target is still 105 minutes. 90 minutes would be a huge bonus. I know it's asking a lot to cut 30-45 minutes off my current PR, but hey, the worst that can happen is that I improve a lot but don't meet some arbitrary cut-off. That's not too bad an end result.
we need to plan a forum mount baldy ride sometime this spring or even this summer! of course i can't imagine doing it in 90 minutes! (or even 105!) i've NEVER claimed to be a fast climber! i'm a tortoise! "slow and steady"!

Okay, I'll get some shorts, too, if I finish the ride.
no! you get shorts regardless of what you do on the ride (although i have no doubt you will finish!)

you MUST have shorts in socal! it's against the law not to!

I'm feeling like a "marked" man here . I'll be working hard to get new PR in the 80 minute range
Damn! All this pie talk is making me want to do this ride!
I think I have an extra road cassette with a large cog...
Hey Fixer, Does this mean we can count you in??

If any of you end up riding part of the route in the two weeks, keep your eyes open for good rest stops. The only ones I know for certain as of now are: General Store at the top of Palomar and a Pie Shop in Julian. We need a rest/water stop between the General Store and Juian, somewhere along Mesa Grande would be perfect, I don't remember if there's anything available through there. We also need a stop somewhere in Ramona, that shouldn't be hard, we'll go through downtown. The last stop ought to be after Bandy Canyon, before we climb Hwy 78 by the Animal Park. If any of you are familiar with any of these areas, please give me some suggestions for rest/water stops. If all esle fails, I plan to bring about 5 gallons of water for the sag car.

I'm not sure about this Sunday, I've got to get home around noon. I might join for a while, if you're meeting at Tustin Marketplace at 8:30, be sure not to go with the 8:30 Como Street group, you'd be in for a very painful surprise I can't wait for my pie

I would love to join you all on the 28th. Besides, I have some business with my in-laws in Costa Mesa that Friday night before the ride so I figured I can spend the night there in CM and head on out the following morning from there. I think that'll work.

Damn, this is gonna be good, please let there be nice weather

With advanced notice, most any Sunday is fine with me. There's a few Saturdays sprinkled in here and there when I might be in the area, too (and not stuck at work). Just post about it or PM me if you ever want a ride partner up Baldy. Nothing wrong with "slow and steady". I averaged under 5 MPH and took 170 minutes on my first successful climb.

You can start a few ways:
From Claremont: Mills Rd and Mt Baldy Rd, 13.5 miles with ~8% average, steeper than GMR (avg grade ~5%)
From Upland: Start from Mountain Ave? Similar to the Mills Rd route.
From Glendora: GMR to Glendora Ridge Road to the Village, Mt Baldy Rd to the ski lifts. Approx 27 miles with just over 7,000'. This is my favorite route. Glendora Ridge Rd is really fun in both directions.

I've only done the Claremont route since the start is two minutes away from my parents' house. 5.5 MPH average wouldn't exactly make you "slow"! From what I've seen, it would make you a typical rider on the mountain. Mt. Baldy's profile along this route looks like this:

Oh boy.......I better start doing some secret training in anticipation of this ride as most of my riding has been on a fixed gear and I know my climbing sucks......

When ovoleg blew past me last Sat on a short uphill sprint during our group ride, I knew I was in deeeep trouble.....

Join dog hair in climbing Palomar four times in a day next weekend. That should do the trick.

Actually, that sounds really scary. A century just on Palomar Mountain! I'll have to try it sometime.

hmmmm so it's an additional 3ish miles to climb to baldy if you do the gmr route? (isn't it about 22 miles round trip to just do gmr to the village?

i've thought of doing the additional climb.. but for whatever reason (uh.... done climbing! lol!) have just turned around and climbed back out of the village and gone "home" errrr tommy's and shopping!

8% grade! sheesh! if stagecoach doesn't fry me.. i'm climbing (locally) either sunday (if it doesn't rain) or monday! no IFs, ANDs, or BUTs!!!!!! no excuses (except rain)! NONE (and NO trips to COLDSTONE after the ride!!!!)

It's about 5 miles from the village to the ski lifts, also the steepest 5 miles. It's about 22 miles one-way from GMR to the village. If I don't join the guys on the Sunday OC ride, I may go and do GMR to the ski lifts. I need this stupid cold to go away, I've been off the bike since Pico and I rode on Sunday.

Isn't there a phone # for GMR updates (Caltrans maybe), that sucks if it's closed on weekends too.
Beanz, are you coming for pie??

That's too bad. You could always climb from Upland. It's a bit easier than the Claremont route for the few miles before they meet.

From the Claremont/Upland side, a point shortly after the tunnels is always the most depressing for me. Just before it gets really steep again, you look to the right and see a long stretch of unrelenting steep road ahead of you, stretching out into the distance. Every time I see that sight, I think about turning around. I really need to stop looking at that point.

My favorite part of the climb (any route, since it's well past the village) is right after the third switchback (a sharp right turn). You look to the right as the road curves to the left, and you see just how far you've climbed in the last few minutes. That view inspires me to finish the climb. The last time I was up, I saw someone taking a picture (Canon digital SLR camera, L-series lens, tripod) at that very spot.

I'll have to borrow my mom's or my sister's camera sometime to take pictures of those spots, though if you've climbed Baldy, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

Beanz, are you coming for pie??

I didn't copy the number down. It was on the sign though! Didn't have any comment about the weekends. I tried to search the other forum as it was in there before but not having any luck. I might do a "drive by" tomorow and copy it down!

The Pie ride sounds good but not sure if I'd keep up with you "monsters of climbing"! Sirlanceimnot is fast and always drops me, so I oughtta be used to it by now!

I'm getting confused with all the dates thrown up here(training rides). What's the date and time and place? If you don't mind, just to be clear.

OC, you sound really fast on the climbs! I just get there!

that sounds beautiful! also sounds a lot like the hairpins and view when climbing latigo out of malibu!
