hi all. mike from montebello. just got me my first folding and suspension bike, downtube 9fs. ive been riding it purely at whittier narrows, but looking into other areas where i can take my 5 year old kid biking with me. whittier narrows is nice but too much sand and people who somehow likes to hog the paths (cant believe 2 can block the entire width and barely moved when i said "excuse me."). im searching for threads regarding parks ideal for kids biking, also welcome to any suggestions.

Hi, folks.

I'm Larry, and have lived in Santa Monica for about 20 years. Most weekends I go for a ride on one of the many loops up into the Santa Monica Mountains, usually early because I like morning light and will see more animals.

Last weekend was really nice, with the early morning moonlight. On Sunday I rode up through Will Rogers State Park where a coyote and some nighthawks greeted me. Farther up along the Backbone Trail there were bats, an owl calling from the little valley below, and a canyon wren near one of the knobs on the ridge.

Friday's ride was up Paseo Miramar to Tripett Ranch. From moonlight on the ocean (running north on the bike path to Temescal Canyon, then on PCH to Sunset) and then up Paseo Miramar with the lights off. Lovely. The sun came up over the San Gabriels as I got near the top, wrapping the few remaining flowers in lovely soft light.

I first started riding there in 1987, on a used Ritchey Ascent. Then got a new Ascent. Then switched to hiking but the bike still saw daily use getting to work. It also pulled the trailer full of sand sculpture equipment to Venice Beach... which was its downfall. Salt, sand and bikes don't mix. In 2003 I bought a Turner 5-spot, which has become my most often used bike. With knobbies it's great in the mountains, and with street tires it's very comfortable on road rides.

I ride to be out there. I stop to look at flowers and animals, and in places that are specially beautiful I get off and walk.

hi all...been lurking for awhile in bike forums and only posting since april 09-mostly in
southern california, road cycling & professional cycling. i live in chula vista-east side-near
southwestern college. not as many rides down here in the san diego south bay area
so i try to hit north/east county at least twice a month. favorite spot to ride in sd county is
anywhere in the palomar/mesa grande/laguna/cuyamaca/banner grade areas. riding an '02
white coppi ksc aluminum w/carbon stays. live for the mountains but settle for the flatlands
or foothills all too often. over to coronado along the silver strand and back is the default ride.

been taking it easy lately; a back injury has had me down for the
better part of a month. some of the recent trip journals to the west/east sides of the sierras from
calamarichris & umd have me motivated to finish recovering and get back out there. the ubiquitous
santa monica & san gabriel mtns. postings don't hurt either; always nice to see the old stomping
grounds in la. hope to see some of the sd forumites out and about soon. happy & safe riding
to all!

I ride in my front yard and no more than 2 houses away, because I need to be able to hear my wife when she calls me. And I case I get a flat I won't have to go far to get my bike fixed.

Record her sweet voice yelling for you, put it in your ipod, that way you can hear her no matter how far you are.

Hi, I'm Tin. First time post here. I live in Westwood near UCLA. I'm 35 and have had my 2008 Scott CR1 Team (105 Gruppo) for 4 weekends now . The only upgrade I did was getting a Specialized Toupe 130 (I have a small ass lol). I'm training my legs/lungs to catch up to all of you guys!! All this talk of 30, 40, 50, 100!!!! trips is a huge motivator!! I've been doing 20-25 mile loops off san vicente. This past Sunday I made my first climp up Sepulveda and boy my legs were dying! I went up and back down as I didnt want to push things by crossing down to the Valley side. Next time I'll do it all and moreso as I get more confident. I need to start riding with folks to learn tips, techniques and most importantly cycling ettiquette. Cheers

hey i am a striving hungry determined person, looking to make a drastic change in my life. Know i still got it but not sure which direction to go in. Looking to start training to be a pro cyclist and started riding from my house in reseda/ tarzana to silverlake atwater area daily, but do not know how to grab a sponser. i currently ride a fixed gear because i am broke and can not afford a nice bike yet. wondering if anyone new where i could audition so to speak for a sponsor. i know about alley cat races but i want to get a vertically integrated perspective on the matter at hand.

Might as well add myself to the list: I'm based in Altadena, above pasadena, and am starting to ride through the linda vista hills mostly. I've mountain biked on brown mountain and the san gabriels for years, and commute a few days a week to work, but on a recent trip to Italy spent a few weeks on a Bianchi doing day trips around villages there and though --- hey, I could get used to this decent road bike+ milieage thing, and have a goal of doing the Solvang century this spring. I ride an early-mid 90s Serrota Colorado II with campy outfitting that I got used.

Santa Monica Rider

I just got back into it. I ride a basso lotto on the San Vicente loop. I'm just getting my legs and lungs back after years of inactivity and a bad nicotine addiction. If you're out there you can't miss me: 61 cm 1991 Basso Lotto, lavender/purple/yellow frame, Campy Record all around, red/white Look pedals....it's a completely retro bike and I love it. If you see me, please say hello!

Welcome newcomers!

ericozeta, have you tried your local LBS team? They might sponsor you.

jtbooth, a lot of SoCal BF people do Solvang, you can probably meet up and ride with some of them.

aldoinla, congrats on quitting the cigarettes. Cycling is a much healthier addiction!

girl_in_lace, have you ever though of doing one of the local century rides?

Hello from Costa Mesa

Hi everyone,

I have had a love for riding for many years and attribute my interest in the sport to Lance Armstrong (since 2000), when he won his second Tour; I was hooked and bought a bike.

I have recently gotten back into training, (more seriously this time around.) My goal is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and enjoy all aspects of cycling. I'm interested in doing some century/half century rides, but have a ways to go.

Weight: 203
Height: 6' 1.5"
Age: 39
Location: Costa Mesa, CA
Riding area: Costa Mesa, Newport, Back Bay, Huntington Beach, Long Beach and Irvine.

I look forward to reading and responding to your threads.

Okay I guess its time to say HI !

The Name is Keith and I'm in Fountain Valley. I can be found riding the board walk and the SART on my Dawes AL-SST. I'm back into the bike scene and this time I'm sticking to the road. Spent many years riding Mtn Bikes all through San Diego and Orange County. A achillies tendon injury and reconstruction sidelined me for a few years but I'm back and going strong. If you see a brushed aluminum SS rolling down the SART its probably me so give me a wave or hollar. See you all on the trails................And BTW I did see the infamous Mayor Beanz a few weekends ago flying up the SART - Next time I'll say hi and run from the camera...lol

Have you been to Lacy Park in San Marino? Beautiful park! They do charge admission on the weekend, though.

Also Live Oak in Temple City, Arcadia County Park in Arcadia.

All three of those parks have nice paths for little kids...

Caligurl, actually you're not that far off. The only difference is that they balance two on a bike, and they don't have a helmet. But yes, I have seen a 'ride by shooting' during my time in Iraq.

It was mid morning I think, and we were just finishing up a patrol. Around the corner this bicycle rolls up with two people on it. One unslings a rifle, and starts shooting. Unfortunately for them, they had never practiced this before, and the recoil from the rifle knocked the bike over by about the third shot. One of the craziest things I've ever seen, and it was hilarious to watch, shame I don't have a video .
