Westchester Parkway Training Ride / by LAX.

4.5 mile loop. Every Tuesday @ 6:30pm. All levels; newbies thru pro. It usually starts out as one big group, and then splits into several groups based on level. Approx 2-3 laps of warm-up, and 5-6 laps at speed. Parking is in back of Mervyn’s.

Map: https://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?na..._y=0&panable=1

PS: If you haven’t ridden in a large group at high speeds before, pick a small group (there's several) until you become comfortable. Safety is #1

Monday: Roger Young's PCH ride. Starts in Corona Del Mar at 6:30am and heads north on PCH, turn-around at Warner, with a little rotating paceline through Bolsa Chica. The pace can be anything and everything from recovery to hammerfest. 28 miles, usually come back with average speed of 20-22 mph.

Tuesday & Thursday: Coffee Crew 6:15am. Large group (30-60 riders)ride starts next to UCI. Heads towards Tustin and around El Toro base, ends with climbs up Ridgeline and the backside of Newport Coast Drive. Fast pace during the race season, but slows down in the Fall.

Tuesday Evening: El Dorado Twighlight Crit Series ~6:00pm. 1 hour of great racing.

Wednesday: Coffee Crew Santiago Canyon ride at 6:00am by UCI. Same group as Tues & Thurs, but smaller. Go up Bake and through Santiago Canyon from Cooks to Jamboree. It supposed to be at recovery pace, but often gets out of control. Fast single file 30 mph paceline through the canyon. 45 miles

Friday: Roger Young's Laguna Canyon ride. Large group starts in Corona Del Mar, goes through Back Bay and Irvine, comes down El Toro and Laguna Canyon back to PCH. This ride has been everything from way too leisurely to a complete sufferfest.

Sunday: Como Street. Starts in Tustin Marketplace at 8:00am. Heads up Irvine Blvd to Bake or El Toro and then through Santiago Canyon. This is usually at race pace and sometimes regroups at the top of Cook's. 35 hard miles.

All of these rides are open to anyone, feel free to ask for more info regarding any of these.

God I'd love to be fast enough to do one of these, someday! Sounds so fun....

BTW, I love the term "sufferfest."

Buds ride in Claremont - Wednesday's at 5:30 pm.. This ride goes until daylight savings time goes away at the end of October.. Cruise over to Bonelli Park then the hammer drops.. 3 laps around Bonelli - 25 miles done usually in a little over an hour.. If you get dropped take the shortcut across through raging waters and you can catch up to the pack again..

Yeah, I have only done Rogers Wednesday ride once this year. I forgot to mention the Saturday ride, I ususally do this one. Saturday starts at Roses Donuts in Corona Del Mar at 7:00am. The rides heads north on PCH, some people turn around at Studebaker, others at 2nd Street in Long Beach, and others go all the way to the Queen Mary. The pace is usually pretty easy.

Not part of any organized ride ... but one of my favorite loops:

[a] start near UCI [b] University bike trail, Harvard, Walnut, Tustin Ranch Rd to [c] Jamboree to [d] Santi Canyon/El Toro to L [e] Marguerite to R [f] Los Alisos to L [g] Paseo de Valencia to R [g] Alicia Pkwy to L [h] Niguel Rd to L [i] Marina Hills Drive to L [j] Parc Vista Dr to R [k] Marina Hills Drive to R [l] Golden Lantern to L [m] Dana Point Harbor Drive (optionally) into Doheny State Beach to volleyball courts or onto PCH to San Clemente Train Station ... back onto Dana Point Harbor Drive ... to [n] Del Obispo to L [o] Stonehill to L [p] Niguel Rd to R [q] PCH ... all the way back to Newport Back Bay and back into Irvine near UCI.

Normally 70+ mi, 4500+' ... get to ride the canyon, lots of hills, next to the Pacifc, and then the usual hammerfest through Back Bay. Gotta love it ...

Cool, I can make that one. I don't drive, so there's not alot of rides that I can go to.

Is it safe for a TOTAL newb?

Sounds like an awesome loop. Would love to do it with you sometime, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep up for all of it. Luckily, I don't mind being dropped at all, so I could just finish it at my own pace.

When do you usually do this ride?

Newb to cycling, or pack riding?

Either way, just PM me when you’re going, and I’ll try to steer you right.

group? what group? ok.... there is a very small contingent of cyclists out here... although it seems easier to get a group together to mountain bike moreso than road bike!

for a moutainbike group ride i love burns canyon... it's a road that if you continue on it... will take you up to onyx... although the 2 times i've done it have either been in the rain or freezing cold... it was gorgeous (is all burnt from the recent sawtooth fire now) but i still want to do it again... going further next time!

Fixer, you gotta list YOURS too (and mine):

Tues/Thurs: Rose Bowl, only from March-October around 6pm..sometimes earlier, sometimes later, I don't know the pattern. Usually 10 laps, about 30 miles, in 1 hour. This is as fast as it gets! I don't do this regularly, just about once or twice a month. I've never been to a Rose Bowl ride where there hasn't been a crash.

Saturday: Montrose Ride, year-round. Starts at Descanso Gardens in La Canada, or Trader Joes in S. Pasadena. 30-50 miles, depending on where you start, or which route you take (short or long). Does not regroup.

Saturday: Simi Valley Ride. From November to March. Option up to 70 miles. Regroups. Can get pretty big. A bit more unforgiving than Montrose. Meets at Los Angeles and Keuhner in Simi Valley around 8am.

Sundays: Griffith Park/La Tuna Canyon Loop. Fixer, you know more about this than I do. I've never done it.

I've also done some of the La Grange rides too, but it's kinda far away for me.

Paul, you've listed most already

But as far as the La Tuna Canyon loop, since I work Sundays now I have not done this ride in quite a while, although our friends Del and others still do this ride. Sunday mornings @ 8:15 the ride starts off from the LA Zoo parking lot and heads towards Tujunga. The first 10 miles or so used to be a small chainring ride until we hit the La Tuna Canyon climb but now since the size of the ride has grown over the years, they've picked up the pace from the start so now everyone's in their big ring. But it's still a nice manageble pace til the ride turns on to La Tuna Canyon then it's a race to the top... The ride re-groups at the top, descends down into Montrose, then up towards Verdugo Hills Hospital where they re-group again. The ride snakes through narrow residentials streets from Descanso Gardens and heads towards the Rose Bowl and eventually reaching Colorado Bl with another re-group then heads back to Griffith Park zoo parking lot. About 35 miles, I think...

I love them because they're only 2 miles from my house and I don't have to pack my car everytime. Also TheFixer has a nice weekly route in Pasadena which includes nice scenery!!

^ The SFVBC rides are nice, and for all levels too! Too bad the short routes are just around town scenery.

I was thinking about going to the velodrome www.encinovelodrome.org training sessions Wednesday evening. $7 plus $5 to rent a decent Fuji track bike (good excuse to buy a fixie after a year) and I don't have to worry about cars!

There's a main group an some groups that usually form. I would suggest that you hang towards the back of the groups first to get a feel (the faster groups tend to burst out from all angles during sprints and break aways) . Always ask questions and if you talk to a snob or two.... ignore them.

WHAT? This is 90% of the fun in group rides. I love talking to snobs, they give me their insight and then they tell me how I can improve and maybe in 5+ years I can be just like them.
