2006 Lighthouse Flat 100 Report!!!

hey kids, im finally starting my own thread thingy!!!!! i apologize in advance for the lack of capital letters and poor punctuation......

this was the fifth time ive done this ride. and as always i did it with my friend bart(aka byron). every year we do it we tend to "camp" the night before and this year was no different!!!! we arrived at cuesta around 12:30 am saturday and proceeded to throw our sleeping bags on the ground over near the baseball fields for a well deserved rest. i woke around 6am as this is when people started pulling into the lot, the perfect alarm clock, it works every year! the other cool thing about our choice of accomodations is that is located about 100 yards from the registration area, perfect!!!!!! so we get all our stuff, pin on the numbers, and get ready to head on out...did i mention it was cold? cuz it was....hella cold....come november i wont complain about the other day, but as its been in the 90's in the ol' SFV, high 50's/low 60's is cold to me right now...anyhow, enough whining...

we decided to do the flat 100 route(wimps...)as bart hadnt been doing much riding of late and heading for the hills just didnt seem like the way to have a good time, so off on the flat course. we hooked up with a guy named tom who was doing his first century, nice guy, super strong, no idea how to ride in a group....we breezed through the first few miles, talking and trying to ignore the cold. this was kinda hard for me as i could hardly breathe due to copious amounts of snot...an overshare perhaps, but that was the deal! we ended up losing tom just after the exotic gardens drive CP(number 2) as he was a man on a mission and barts knee was acting goofy and i opted to stay with him and help get him through the nasty headwinds to the turnaround up at piedras blancas.

the stretch from san simeon to the turnaround is ALWAYS a MF'er. the wind is always howling and this year it was butt ass cold as well(as many can and will attest to!), but we made it. we got passed by a few riders but we made it. then it got fun...i love the stretch back to the lunch stop for the same reason i dread riding up to the turnaround...the wind! cuz now its blowing you back! we hauled major ass back to lunch.

once we got to the park and settled down to one of the finest turkey and pastrami sammiches ive had in a bit, things got interesting....i saw a guy that i was pretty sure was scott d, a dude id met via the evil crack known as myspace. but a s i saw him as we were heading out and he looked to be hanging i just took off rather than saying hi, i suck i know....anyhow, we climb up the hill outside of cambria, bart is still having trouble so im not hauling much ass and scott suddenly rides past me! i caught up to him, say hi, and finally intro myself...awesome!!!! freaky that was able to even cross paths with him!!! so we ride to the last CP together, chatting all the way. a minute or so after we get there bart pulls in and i introduce them. scott is telling me about some people hed been riding with and oh, there they are! turns out one was ms MERider1 herself! crazy small world! so we all rode to the finish together(more or less as some got stuck at a light...).

oh one other thing....i sometimes forget how powerful the mind is cuz as soon as i saw the sign that said cuesta college, .5 miles ahead, i crapped out.....i was riding pretty strong up to that point but i shut down when i saw that sign....weird...

all in all a wonderful ride with a bunch of wonderful people!!!!! ill try and post some pics soon!!!

Stats if ya care......
Total time=07:28
Moving time=05:48
Total distance=98.3 miles
Overall Avg Speed=13.2mph
Moving Speed=16.9 mph/avg
Max Speed=40.7
Elevation gain=3839 ft
Total calories=7507

if you hung in this long, thanks a ton for reading!!!!!

its a great ride. good food, cool people...only bummers were how cold it was and the the food at the end was fairly suspect....they used to have a pretty decent tri tip sammy, but this year it was the fattiest chicken ive ever seen...to quote my friend bart,"it looks like they fed this chicken pizza". truer words have never been spoken..

Great report, Bill. I like yours better than mine! Sounds less mushy and more "haul a*s." (of coure, I wasn't really hauling anything in THAT wind! Wow, I look as exhausted in that pic as I felt. Had I known you were taking it, I would have mustered a smile. I swear I had a good, if not chilly, time.
Glad you guys had a good ride, and again, it was really nice to meet you.

SEXY? You mean my tree trunk legs? You just became my favorite person on here.... Sad, I know. But I've always wished for those feminine lithe legs. I will say one thing, my "trunks" are strong and can carry me 200 miles. So, I guess I should just shut up...
But boy do I look sad in that photo, which I wasn't at all. Plus, with all the white sunscreen paste on my face...mmmm, lovely...

Hey, strong or srong...I'll take it. I think Scootcore has some strong legs, too - especially considering I couldn't keep up with him and Bart!
