Losing interest in the Socal Forum...

I'm finding less and less of interest here in the Socal BF. It seem that many of the threads are very personal conversations that only a couple of people know anything about. Now don't get me wrong, I love that we can talk about anything here, BUT just like having a private conversation or private joke in the middle of a group of friends, by leaving them out, you alienate them. I guess everyone wants to be a part of a clic and to appear cool (kind of like high school huh?), but this is a public forum, so may I suggest something???

The next time you start a thread that is directed at one or two people, maybe you could let all the others in on the joke or some history of subject being discussed, that way everyone can join in on the fun.

Blast away.

that's kind of why i started the "what's up" thread... to try to keep all off topic in there... but yes... i've seen a lot of one person threads lately too! or even threads directed at one person "hey so and so.. you doing X ride/trail this weekend" then they commence to chat.... mostly just those two peeps.... to me (only my opinion) those would be better served with PM"s... but it's not my forum...

Yeah Caligurl, the "What's up" thread is great, but I don't have the time to even come close to following that thread. You know how it is, if you go away for ten minutes, let alone a day or two you have no idea whats going on.

Don't stress that. Even the people in that thread have no idea what's going on. They'll just jump in again wherever it happens to be.

I think that comparing this forum to high school...is very high school. We're all (aside from Max) adults here and only you can choose your level of participation in the conversations here. I don't see anyone being mean and purposely excluding people from anything. Speaking for myself (as one of the prolific posters) I only talk to a couple of people here via PM, so almost all of the history of what I post about can be found out there in the depths of the various threads and I can't feel bad that some people haven't kept up on it and feel left out.

1955: Just do what I do: Hijack every thread and make it your own.

Other than that...whatcha want to talk about? The SoCal forum is what YOU make of it, since it's so new and there's really no set of protocols as to what should be discussed, by whom, and for how long.

I'm all for discussing bikes, rides, and the minutae of our two-wheeled conveyance, but if some of these threads devolve into silliness and inside joking, well...that's just to be expected.

Ralph, I am more or less in your boat, certainly not part of any clique and I don't keep up with the posts. But, that is my choice, the posts I do read amuse me. If they did not, I wouldn't come here.

[Edited to add]
Actually, I am amazed at how well this forum is going seeing how it is unregulated. I think the people here are doing a great job respecting everyone else.

I'm not talking about hijacking the threads, that's funny, it's the ones that start off as a private conversation. I just think that's rude.

I used to peruse BF a lot, but maybe it's just me, but one line conversations that go on forever about a burrito bore me.

I'm just disappointed that this forum that is full of great people with a wealth of knowledge is degrading into nothing but mindless dribble.

Like I just stated in replying to Mo'phat's post, I'm just disappointed and it might be time to move on.

If it is bicycling knowledge you are after, the rest of the forums are still open. I spend quite a bit of time there as well.

It is not my intention to argue. I am more or less like you and just giving my contrarian opinion.

It's not the responsibility of the other posters here to keep your boredom at bay Ralph. Seems like a whole lot of people do enjoy the "mindless dribble" but if you're above that...then bring something more substantial to the threads.

Actually, I've seen plenty of bicycle-related discussion in here. Tires, parts, routes, bike-friendly vehicles, upcoming rides, jerseys, general advice. Just for the record.

No, I wasn't taking it that way at all, and I rarely come here for info, but I do come here to read and discuss subjects at least somewhat related to road bikes.

You really should get over yourself, what makes you think I was talking to or about you? Just go somewhere and read something that does interest you.

Well, gosh Ralph, it seems you wish to be a curmudgeon. I think you probably ended any sympathy.

And, by the way, the fact you started the thread gives you no special privileges.

Hey, so, uhm... it looks like there's some tension brewing in this thread, and like a poster above said I think we've done a really good job of sort of self-policing that. I think it's because we're all local and that whole seven degrees thing really applies to us SoCalians. I've never ridden with Ralph, for instance, but I've ridden with others who have.

Anyway, I just don't want to see the mods have to come in here and start throwing their weight around.

I really wasn't looking for sympathy, I was stating what has been bothering me. If you think I'm a curmudgeon...well whatever. I knew I was walking into trouble here, people take these threads personally and that's my point! All I said was, let others in on the joke sometimes.
