Me and my friend had the "brilliant" idea of possibly riding out to the beach tomorrow. It's actually not that hard since we can take the SART for most of the way. But the kicker is that we'd be starting from Ontario and would have to bike out to the start of SART... The problem i see is that you have to go around the hills between Chino and Yorba Linda somehow.

When checking the map we can either go around the east side through corona or around the west through diamond bar then hook up with SART.

Has anybody done this before and which side would you recommend?

[i'm estimating it to be about a 40-50 mile ride one way and we'd be meeting up with other friends at Huntington Beach to get a ride back home]

Try using www.bikemetro.com. This should give you a pretty good route.

Why not go thru the Chino Hills.

Take Riverside Drive or make your way thru Francis (many side streets to get there).
Riverside drive turns into Peyton. Take Peyton to ( I believe it's Chino Hills Prkway), make a right go about 1/4 mile, then a left Thru Carbon Canyon(a lil bit of climbing, one steep section for about 1/4-1/2 mile).

Carbon Cyn is a 7 mile hill section but mostly downhill in that direction once you get passed the short steep section.

After you are thru the Cyn, make a left on Kraemer which takes you about 5-7 miles straight down to the path (Kraemer exit) SOme truck traffic on Kraemer but mostly on weekdays. Not that bad on the weekends. I've done it before.

OR-OR-OR...if you want more climbing,

Take Peyton to Grand Avenue (3 or 4 one miler hills), left on Diamond Bar blvd,left on Brea Blvd, thru Brea Cyn(runs along the 57). Left on Lambert (right before you get to the Brea Mall).Then a mile or two to Kraemer, down to the SART.

There is a samll side streetbefore you get to Kraemer. There is a shopping center on the corner (Stater Bros?Vons?Albertsons?type of market). If you turn left there, you will climb a short steep hill then curve around to the right and end up at Lambert and 57 intersection. Make a left to Kraemer then right down to the trail.

I was eyeing Carbon Canyon but i wasn't sure how much of a climb it was.

Starting form this end, there is a one mile gradual incline. Not really a hill but you'll know you're not going down(maybe like the section from Foothill to 19th Street on EUCLID AVE.). Then a short steep climb thru a couple of switchbacks,maybe 1/4 mile. You heart will pump but it's over quickly. Then most of the remainig 7, you should be doing around 25 mph easily. At the far side, ther is a 1/4 mile climb. Most of the buds cans stand and power thru it, so it aint long at all. Then downhill to Kraemer and dh from there.

The lil bit of effort climbing into CCyn is worth the "blowing thru" that you'll be enjoying!

Most of it is downhill. The climbing is from the opposite direction.

Thought about it, but it would take weeks from my Ontario . The beach would be worth it thought .

As you head south on Kramer (from Lambert as I would do the DB/South on Brea Canyon Cut-off route), is the trail easy to spot? What east/west streets is it around?

I live a right by Chino Hills Parkway/Carbon Canyon, but have not tried it yet. It gets pretty narrow, and with these high school kids and text messaging/or yappin on their cells, I'm pretty concerned about riding CC. I guess a Sat or Sun morning very early should be safe. They are still sleeping!

Yeah carbon canyon from the chino hills side is a nice climb for about a mile at the beginning and a short steep hill in the middle the rest you feel like your going downhill the whole time.

If you want to go through Corona, I think the most direct route would be staright down Hamner, then right on E Grand, right on Raildroad, left on Auto Center, Right on Palisades, and right on Green River. This take you to the SART entrance.

Carbon Canyon is the better route to the beach, but you could also go through Diamond bar to Brea Canyon road which will take you to the same place, Kraemer to go to the trail.. If you head straight down Kraemer, it is about 4-5 miles to the Beach trail.. You cannot miss it..

I'd want to say yes but I was a lil lost myself the first time I traveled that rt. Really shouldn't be as you ride right over the trail. Now that I'm familiar, I would look for the big ugly blue and yellow hotel.(Used to be an ugly orangish color)

You should know though as from the trail, your side of the trail is Kraemer and once you cross the trail, it becomes Glassell. Maybe there will be a few riders passing thru that should make it a bit more noticeable. I'm pretty sure one of the streets crossing your rt should be La Palma.

Thanks! Were leaving Chino Hills at 6:30am tomorrow, through Carbon Canyon (can't be that bad that early:>), south on Kramer to the trail/HB. From there, south to Newport Coast Drive for the hills, to Peets in Corona Del Mar, and back to HB/trail to Kramer. Were going to do Brea Cayon CutOff to DB Blvd on way home -- seems safer than Carbon Canyon in/around early afternoon.
