Where is the best place to ride (road and/or mountain) in southern CA?
 

Where would be a nice/nicest place to have a nice quiet and relatively easy ride in so. Cal? (consider the scenery, atmosphere/wheather, road and traffic, etc)

mutliple/any opinions are welcome.

Edit # 1: I am located in LA, but am open to other places too, no more than say.. 50 miles?

Am located in LA, I am going to check out the santa monica mountain trials, but was wondering if there were any other places, say, roads or just grass land, that is nice around here...:rolleyes:

Nice trails. On the Chaney Trail I've only ridden as far up as Inspiration Point.

Is that the spot right at the end of the pavement? It gets a lot easier from there. I've descended that way from Mt. Wilson on a road bike...

I used to live and ride in thr Conejo Valley (where LA county meets Ventura county) and it was far nicer to ride there than it is in the San Fernando Valley where I live now.

No it's still quite further up. Inspiration Point it at the top close to the remnants of the Mt Lowe Hotel or restaurant or whatever they used to have up there. The top of Idlehour trailhead is there also.

Like I tole you a while ago.....COME HOME! (or at least visit your parent's and bring the bike!)

From there you can go all the way to Mt Wilson/Red Box road, through a tunnel on a dirt road, strange. It's a long, tough climb and in winter can be FREEZING on the way back down.

you can also try Del Cerro Park in Palos Verdes. fairly small trail compared to SaMO mountains. lots of singletrack branching off of a main fireroad. the scenary and seabreeze is great i might add.

All fairly close to the southern end of Malibu. Latigo is furthest north and longest.
All are very low traffic.

Ok, any of you Conejo Valley riders ever ride with the North Ranch MTB club? Or go to TOHS?

Seems like you're getting mostly road-oriented responses, but if you haven't already you should come out to the San Bernardino Mountains and ride the Santa Ana river trail (It's not just a paved path by the beach.). 30ish (The big loop, starting from Loch Leven, is over 50 miles, but if that's too much to take on there are several shorter options.) miles of sweet singletrack. Do it quick before it's (hopefully!) covered up by snow.

I should point out that for MTB riding, Agoura to Ventura offers a lot of good rides. A wide variety of trails, and a chance to see everything from coyotes to deer. I miss trails that end at Mexican restaurants.

For road riding, from where you are, an area with lots of hills and great scenery, I'd say Palos Verdes. Most of these are residential climbs that overlook either the Pacific (views from Long Beach, Catalina Island, up towards Santa Monica) or overlooking the LA basin. Great climbs are:

[b] Via Coronel, Via Zurita, Via Fernandez, Via Coronel (again), Paseo la Cresta
[c] PV Dr S to PV Dr E, Crest Rd (to the observatories)
[d] Eastvale, Sunnyridge
[e] from [a] or [b], Ridgegate, Highridge, Whitley Collins (high end on W side of PV)
[f] from the bottom of [a], Via Campesina, Rolling Meadows Rd, Silver Spur Rd, Montemalaga, Granvia Altamira
