ok your right, no way in 5 hours. I'm in no hurry for pie

Paul, if time becomes an issue, you could always do South Grade and the observatory out and back with us, and then either head straight back or descend East Grade to Lake Henshaw and then head back along the highway. A good 5500 vertical feet is in that initial portion of the ride.

I'll think about it...I'm thinking about hours versus mileage. I just did 65 in 4:08 on Sunday (Wild Animal Park to Lawrence Welk, up Old Castle/Lilac to the Valley Center Middle School, to Bates Nut farm, and back to Lilac/Old Castle, Lawrence Welk. Plenty 'o climbing on that route as well as about 22 miles through Escondido traffic signals.

That's why I thought 80 in 5 to 6 hours was doable with the speed of the descents...but if we're averaging 6 mph up South Grade and 5 up Mesa Grande, I can see where hours can add up.

If, by the weekend, it's still looking like a 8-10 hour day, I'll probably either do the route you suggested or drop down with the group to Henshaw and go back up East. (Legs permitting)

Need another rider for this route?

You guys mind if I tag along? I can climb okay but I've an average descender. I recently did a similar route with the San Diego Century Riders a couples weeks back.

Regards,

Ian

Yep...but I'm hoping for just about 5.5 to 6 hours ride time. I have a plan (albeit hackneyed, cockeyed, uneducated, and screwballish) to be in shape for the Pie ride, so practical training is what I'm after...not pi$$ing off the wife cause I'm gone all day on a Sunday, leaving her with the kids.

Mo'Phat, sounds like you're my speed or a bit faster. I expect we'll take about 5.5-6 hours ride time if the winds are reasonably calm. I don't expect long breaks except a decent-sized break for pie in Santa Ysabel. Joining us out to Lake Henshaw and then turning around and climbing East Grade would give you basically the same amount of vertical we have, but with all the flat-ish sections cut out, it allows you to squeeze it into a shorter ride time-wise. Of course, you do miss out on pie, though. You could always play it by ear depending on how the pace is going by the time we reach Lake Henshaw.

By the way, doing either route virtually assures you of being ready for the Pie ride. About 8000 vertical feet either way. Pie ride (without optional extensions) is about 9000 vertical feet spread out over more miles.

Yes, but it's the miles and the time on the bike that I'm conditioning for. Strength, I've got...endurance and ass/neck/arm conditioning is what I ain't got.

The only thing that hurt from Sunday's ride was my neck. It doesn't hurt today, so I figure my conditioning is improving.

ps. Pie would pretty much negate my anticipated 4000 calorie working I'm hoping to get. But, I do love pie.

Nonesense! Pie is simply refueling. I plan to eat one Clif bar on Palomar, a candy bar and/or a soda at Lake Henshaw, and pie in Santa Ysabel. That should fuel me through this ride.

But there's pie! Well, suit yourself... I'll see you at the Thanksgiving Pie ride. [EDIT] Oh, and JTNP before then.

You're training for the Thanksgiving Pie ride too, huh?

Just kidding... it would be awesome if you happen to drop by and say hi. You could always time your trip out there to coincide with pie.
