OFF Topic - I PASSED my CSETS! :)

Hello all,

For those of you not in the teaching profession, the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) is the biggest hurdle to pass on the way to teaching full time and obtaining teaching credentials. It is equivalent to GREs in Chemistry for example for grad school people, the LSAT for law school, or the MCAT for medicine - important tests. The CSETs are not all that difficult, but they cover LOTS of knowledge. More that 75% do not pass on their first time around for example .

My area is Science and I had to talk the
118 General Science - Earth and Physical Science
119 General Science - Biological Science
221 Chemistry Specilized

118 Covers Geology, Weather Systems, Astronomy, Chemistry (including periodic trends, thermodynamics, etc) and Biochemistry
119 Covers, Cell, Genetics, and General Biology, Evolution, Body Systems, Astronomy, etc.
221 is All chemistry - General, Organic, Biochemistry, Analytical, Instrumental Methods, Lab, etc.

I studied for almost 2 months for 221 and passed with flying colors.

118 and 119 were very difficult - but today I got my unofficial results _ I PASSED!

On 118 I did not even answer the written section and you need a 220 out of 330 to pass and the multiple choice is worth 225 and the written 75 - I aced the multiple

Sorry I am just estatic - in 4 months I will be student teaching and working full time in about 9 months!

I can not wait - not back to the regularly scheduled program!

Mandy

Congratulations. I was lucky and only had to pass the CBEST, which was really just the equvilent of high school math and English. Not to discourage you, but your credential will only be good for 5 years until you clear it. I'm one of the squeaky wheels trying to get BTSA (the 2 year program equivilent to grad school you will have to take after you get your credential) reformed so that it is structured better.

Let me know if you have any questions. I've only been teaching for 2 years but I like to think that I am doing pretty well in classroom management if I can get a class of 60 teenagers to shut up

You rock. My wife had to go through the ordeal of teacher's examinations, so I can definitely relate.

Off topic because it's not bicycle related (as if half the threads in the regional section are on topic), but now that someone asked if she'll have time to ride, it's on topic

Hello Mandy,

That is quite an achievement and you should be proud. The kind of perseverance and dedication that you showed getting your certificate are the kinds of attributes that I would hope to see in all of my children's teachers. I'm sure you're going to do very well in your chosen profession.

Now get back on the bike and enjoy yourself a little.

Congratulations Mandy!

Not to toot my own horn but I, too, passed my CSETs in September (I think), although mine was in Social Science. With your science credential you should be highly employable, which is not the case for me. I am planning to take the CSET in Spanish (I'm fluent)in January just to be more employable.

I'm attending Cal State Fullerton and I'll have my BA in May. Will apply to the teacher program February 28th for Fall '97 entry. I'm 56 years old and starting a new career after a brief retirement.

Where are you doing your program?

Congrats once again!
