Santa Barbara to Northridge--again

Sorry to have to do this again, but my prior thread somehow got deleted (probably in one of the server hangups of a week or two ago). Anyhow, this weekend is my ride from SB to the Valley (assuming we don't get rained out), and I wanted to confirm my route with someone. Decided to go over Casitas Pass, which I think simplifies things. Jim T or Nesdog were helpful last time--you still there? This is edited from the directions spewed out by the Mapsource software I just bought.

Here's the route I've come up with:
Get on Modoc Rd and drive southeast
[Heading Southeast on Modoc]
Turn left onto W Mission St
Turn right onto Castillo St
Turn left onto W Haley St
Turn right onto State St
Turn left onto E Cabrillo Blvd
Turn right onto Channel Dr
Turn left onto Monte Cristo Ln
Turn left onto Channel Dr
Turn right onto Danielson Rd
Bear right onto S Jameson Ln
Turn left onto Eucalyptus Ln
Turn right onto N Jameson Ln
Turn right onto Ortega Hill Rd
Turn right onto Ortega Hill Rd
Get on Via Real and drive southeast
Turn right onto Santa Ynez Ave
Turn left onto Carpinteria Ave
Turn left onto Casitas Pass Rd
Turn right onto Casitas Pass Rd
Turn left onto N Ventura Ave
Turn right onto Ojai Santa Paula Rd
Get on Ojai Santa Paula Rd and drive south
Turn left onto E Harvard Blvd
Turn right onto S 12th St
Turn right onto Bardsdale Ave
Turn right onto Grimes Canyon Rd
Turn left onto E High St
Turn right onto Spring Rd
Turn left onto Tierra Rejada Rd
[I KNOW HOW TO GET HOME FROM HERE]

So it looks like the route you are taking is now focusing more on the Ojai back country rather than the coastal flatlands? I don't know the turn by turn for much of that, although having ridden through parts of this your plan looks correct. Once you get to more familiar areas in Moorpark and Simi, you don't need my help anyhow!

Sounds like a fun trip...rain is forecast for Sat night through Sunday though.

Yeah, we decided to do some long climbs as part of the ride, hence the Casitas/Ojai portion.
Bummer about the rain. We're keeping our fingers crossed. Thanks

I'm a SB native and may I suggest one small change? Instead of going into Carp, make a left onto Nidever Rd, then a right onto Foothill. Foothill will eventually change into Casitas Pass. This way you won't have to deal with downtown lights. Also, I used to live on Modoc (you're starting point). Were you just planning on parking a car there, cause you can't. There's no parking on Modoc north of Los Positas Drive.

If somebody is planning on driving you up and dropping you off, then I would start at a different point. If you're going gung-ho and not planning on site-seeing then I would have the drop off point more by Stearn's Wharf...possibly the Chase Palm Park parking lot located about an 1/8 mile south (to the left) of the Wharf. Then take Cabrillo Blvd along the beach (bike path) until it turns into Coast Village Rd (Montecito). Stay on Coast Village until you come to a very confusing 5 way stop. There make a left and then an immediate right onto Jameson. Stay on Jameson until you make your right onto Ortega Hill Rd (only ONE right as opposed to what you have written down.)

If you want me to map it and give you a link I'd be happy to.

Someone was going to drop us off.

Thanks. I'll try to map it out and ask you if I have questions. What's the benefit of this route versus what I had?
On of my goals was to make it a century, as starting at Modoc made the ride exactly 100 miles to my house. If starting elsewhere is better and gives me the same distance, I' love to hear it.
Thanks for your help.

Gotcha! You might want to take Los Positas toward the ocean, make a left at the end then take a right on Shoreline which turns into Cabrillo. A bit tougher than Castillo but you'll be a bit more rural without all the stop signs. Definately take my advice in Carpinteria though. It will be much more enjoyable.

BTW, Monte Cristo is a dead end.

NNRider, see if this works out https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=586862 . A hell of a lot more direct, more pretty, less traffic, and best of all...no dead ends! LOL Pretty smooth ride with the exception of the left turn at the end of Los Positas. There will be a hill from the turn to about the 2 mile mark.

Hey NR Rider, glad to see you are doing the ride!

Great directions by G_Sup, may I make two suggestions

1. From Modoc go through Hope Ranch to connect to Cliff
2. From the start, take 192 all the way to 150

G_Sup's directions are dynamite, I am just throwing suggestions out there

Since you are driving (I thought you were going to take the train the night before) is there room for one more + a bike? If you can swing by Moorpark, I can do the ride with you (I think)

Any interest in either of those,

I'd love to do it as well, except my legs would fall off right at about Ojai.

Hi Jim--I'll check it out. The plans morphed since I wrote about this before. A buddy, me and the spouses were going up Saturday morning, spending the day and night in SB, then he and I were riding back Sunday and the wives were driving back to my house. Given the rain in the forecast we cancelled our reservations this afternoon (3-day canc policy at the hotel) and now we're playing it by ear, though if I had to guess I would say it's getting postponed.
Would love to have you join us, though you'd smoke us both, especially on the hills (I know since I saw what you did on the ~20% grade on th Simi ride the other day). Will let you know when we do it.
Still very much interested in the route, and definitely will end up doing it, so this info is helpful.
Are you doing the Solvang Century?
Oh, and thanks to the three of you who responded.

Yeah, that rain is coming at the wrong time. Oh well.

I don't think I will be doing the Solvang Century. I haven't really figured out what I am doing next year as far as organized rides. I guess I should start thinking about it.

cheers

I'm doing the Northridge-> SB, staying at a friend of a friends house, visiting a professor at UCSB and then driving back the following day...

I'll be doing this in the next 2 months or so

Do you have a route mapped out or are you familiar enough with the area that you don't need it?

I just was over on the Fillmore side and could see a little fire what looked like between Santa Paula and Ojai. So, even if there isn't rain, there may still be a fire in that area.

awhile ago Danno gave me a pretty nice route, I used that with a few modifications and I made it just fine. A friend drove me back, but I was definately considering riding back...Its really not that hard of a ride, most of it is relatively flat and its about 112 miles from my house to UCSB dorms

Well, now looks like there's a 75% chance we'll still do this. Just wondering a couple things:
1. Why the recommendation re Hope Ranch?
2. I can't find the 192. Hint?[EDIT--Never mind, found it]
Let me know if you can join us. We'd still drive up Sat and spend the night and ride back Sun.

I will let you know this afternoon.

Hope Ranch is a scenic way to get from Modoc to Cliff Drive. Here is a map.

192 goes between Goleta to Route 150. less traffic. Kind of hilly around Montecito. Rolling stuff after that.

What time were you leaving Sunday? It would take me about 4 hours to ride there to meet you. I can take a train. But the earliest one gets there at 10:11.

Anyway, I will let you know later today.

[edit] OK, I am thinking I am available Sunday. What time are you planning to leave?

It's much more scenic with less traffic and wider bike lanes (Mission has no bike-lanes and zero shoulders). You can replace this section of your directions:
Get on Modoc Rd and drive southeast
[Heading Southeast on Modoc]
...
Turn left onto E Cabrillo Blvd
- go southeast on Modoc to top of hill (about 1-mile)
- right at top of hill on Via Senda, go 50m
- right on Las Palmas into Hope Ranch

Catch a view on the left like this about 200m after the front gate:

- Wind through Hope Ranch per above map and exit the back gate, right onto Cliff.
- Go down the hill, up the hill and right on Meigs
- Meigs becomes Shoreline which becomes Cabrillo (same spot as your directions)

You get to see this along the way:

Stearns Wharf is right at the intersection of State & Cabrillo and you can stop off there for lunch. I like LongBoards which is kinda a cafe/grill place on the 2nd floor here:

Then the next section leaving State/E.Cabrillo:
Turn left onto E Cabrillo Blvd
...
Turn right onto N Jameson Ln
can be done like this map:

There's a MUP/bike-path that parallels E.Cabrillo and it may be better than the crowded street with tourists diving into parallel-parking spots in front of you. There'll be pedestrian & other bikers/skaters on the MUP, so you'll be limited to 10mph, but it's more scenic, leisurely and safer than the street IMHO.

The path crosses over to the north side of Cabrillo at Milpas, then continue east past the zoo:

Then turn right on Channel drive at the end of Cabrillo (if you go under freeway, you went too far). The only difference from your directions is instead of turning left into the dead-end at MonteCristo, you continue straight on Channel Dr. up the hill all the way to the beach. The road becomes a bike-path along a really scenic view of the ocean (that's why the map-software didn't work). The path will dump you out on Channel Drive on the other side and you'll see a nice view of Butterfly beach and the Biltmore and Coral Casino resorts.

Looking back up the way you came (bike-path is on top edge of cliff at centre of image):

Then Channel curves left at the Coral Casino and becomes Olive Mill Rd. Go up and cross over 101 and right on Jameson Ln. and continue to Ortega Hill like your original plan.

I also agree with the others to bypass downtown Carpinteria, go up to 192/Foothill Rd at Nidever and take that all the way to Casistas Pass. Have fun!

Danno, thanks a bunch. Good new and bad news.
Bad news is I got your email too late for it to be of any help, as we took a train to Goleta last night.
Good news is we ended up doing a tremendous ride.
Plans changed a lot. After going back and forth, canceling, etc., we checked the latest weather reports yesterday morning and concluded that it was going to rain yesterday but not on Sunday. Walking around State St. on Saturday with the wives was out.
We therefore left the wives at home (more their choice), and my buddy and I took the 3:41 train from Chatsworth to Goleta. Got to the station in Goleta at 5:30 or so, then rode the 1.5 miles or so from the station to the Pacifica Suites hotel, which was fairly nice (riding in the dark with no lights is always fun). (We went to Goleta in order to make the ride to my house in Northridge a full century. Then we woke up this am, ate the complementary breakfast, and headed out at 7:30 or so.
Given the rains on Saturday we re-thought the route over Casitas pass and instead opted for the simpler and flatter (and, so we thought, safer) route over Pleasant Valley/Santa Suzanna.
I must say that the Santa Barbara area is just amazing. We rode to San Diego from Irvine a few weeks ago and this was a much better ride, mostly because of the time spent with the amazing scenery for the first 50 miles or so. (The tailwinds didn't hurt either.) Also our first experience riding on the freeway.
Jim--your revised directions were great. My buddy and I were drooling over some of the houses on Las Palmas that we wouldn't have seen had we not gone that route.
Sadly we didn't have a camera to bring along, so no pics, although Danno's posts contain great pics of stuff you can see on this ride. Truly a great experience. Now time for a hot shower.
If anyone wants the route slip PM me.

Hey, glad you had a good ride. That Danno is incredible with his pictures and knowledge. There are several ways to go so you can plan another one and do a little different route.
