MLK Day Ride 1/15/07

I'm a newbie here and haven't had a chance to ride with any BF riders and was wondering if there is a MLK Day ride in the works. It's a perfect day to ride since most people will have the day off.

Thanks

I just looked and I have the day off...

set something up!

OC Roadie 01-02-07 05:37 PM

For those into racing, there's a crit/circuit (MLK Classic) race around Leimert Park in Los Angeles. There's no race flyer yet, I think it usually gets posted after the race  It's a fun course in an area that most of us would never otherwise ride in. I'll be there, if I get the all clear from the Dr. I don't have the day off, or I'd join you guys. The race is early, and I'll be to work by 9:30am :(

It's two days after the Stagecoach, so everyone should be in recovery mode, something like only 75 feet of climbing per mile. :p

Time for the OC riders and others to come up and enjoy the Santa Monica's and PCH through Ventura/Malibu.

There is a park by Pepperdine on PCH, we could meet there, ride up to Latigo, climb Latigo to Mulholland, down Decker to Westlake, take Potero to the coast and back to PCH, I have to look at my polar ride charts and I'll see if I can figure out mileage and climbing.

What does everyone think?? Just an idea for a route.

merider1 01-02-07 06:35 PM

Hmm...100 at Stagecoach on 1/13 (with climbing), GMR to Baldy and back at Stagecouch on 1/14 (climbing...duh) and then a ride through the Santa Monicas with climbing on 1/15... Yeah, sure. Why not? OR, we could do the SGRT down to Seal Beach (76 miles RT) have lunch and back. Or, just out 50 miles RT to Whittier Narrows and then lunch at Green Onion. It would be flat, but for all of us with the heavy climbing, it would be a nice way to get miles and a different workout.

Thoughts?:D

The 50 miler to Whittier with food after sounds nice and friendly to me.

I wouldn't turn down a ride in the Santa Monica's though. If the vote goes for Santa Monica Mtns, I've been toying with similar route that goes PCH (starting at pepperdine, going up PCH to Latigo, take Latigo over the mountain to Mulholland. South on Mulholland to Old Topanga. Old Topanga -> PCH and then back to Pepperdine. That's a 45 mile, 4600 ft route.

So many choices.

I'm in for any of the above. Was already planning a Mullholland/Westlake/Potrero ride for that weekend, so that works for me. But I'm fine with doing that on 1/13 and then joining everyone for a different route on 1/15.

tbrown524 01-02-07 07:13 PM

How about starting at Whittier Narrows.. I'm a little biased since I usually ride there on the weekends and it's riding distance from my house.. :D

Actually, Ron, I was going to set up the ride you mention above and that you PM'd me later on (although, it certainly can take place on 1/15). I'm up for either/or...and if it is 50 miles to Whittier Narrows, I would propose friendly but at a good pace. Some riders could go a little faster if they want, while others can take it back a notch. It isn't a difficult route and it's out and back. It wouldn't be as much fun as the Santa Monicas for sure (I love it over there!), but my tired legs may need a break from climbing by that Monday. So, I may post a thread for it if anyone wants to join. Or not...:p I'm so indecisive today for some darn reason.

I wouldn't be adverse to that - except you'd have to come up with a fabulous lunch spot! Green Onion is good grub and I ride to eat! :D

I'm definitely fine with the flat friendly ride, so I vote for that.

I might even take the day off for a SGRT ride...but I would rather start at Encanto Park...thats a long enough drive as it is...

I'd be up for that. I missed the last SGRT ride 'cause of family stuff.

Bernie

merider1 01-03-07 11:28 PM

Well, I'm seriously considering SGRT, with the 50 out to Whittier Narrows and back. I'll start a thread and see who wants to join.

If I have the day off, I'd like to be down for the Whittier ride even though my LA geography is awful and I'm not sure where that is! Whittier is south of LA-- heading into the OC or in the OC, right??

Come, Flipflops!! It's not too far! And if you are coming from the Southbay, you could take the 405 to my place in Sherman Oaks and we can carpool together to Encanto (I'll drive from my place). This will shorten your commute over. :)

Heya, this ride became this thread:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=257941

Sign up over there :)

We're meeting at Encanto Park which is just east of the 605 where it ends at the 210. (Due east of Pasadena, North East of downtown LA)

How sweet you are, Ron! Thanks. Duh...I didn't think of providing thread link, even when I created the thread!

flipflops 01-05-07 04:20 PM

*grrr* Of course I don't get the day off. I might just have to play hookie. I mean, seriously, its MLK day!! I wish I was like RonJon10 who works at a cool company that appreciates the significance of the day and gives its employees time off to reflect on the importance of the man and his contribution to society ;)
