San Diego Brevet Series 200km

Hello everyone. I wanted to let you know that on January 20th 2007 the first in a series of brevets will be held. Brevets are a part of Randonneuring in other words they are unsupported long distance events. Glossary of terms can be found here.

2007 is a Paris-Brest-Paris year. PBP is held every four years and is the highlight of the brevet series. It is 1200km event and overnight stops are minimal if you want to make the 90 hour cut-off.

I personally discovered brevets after doing the California Triple Crown. I was looking for another challenge something harder than double centuries and so moved away from supported double centuries and found brevets. They make you better Ultra rider because you have to be self-supported for distances of 200km (125 miles) 300km(187 miles) , 400 km (252 miles)and 600km (387 miles) they are non-stop and self supported. You can do one or all of them. But you must do them in sequence from 200-600km if you wish to qualify for PBP. Even if you qualify and don't want to participate in PBP you are still awarded the Super Randonnuer award. There are certain levels of certification complete with medals. By the way, they are very inexpensive usually costing less than $20.00.

On more note--For those doing Butterfield you can preview a portion of the climbing. I will be on my Fixed Gear this year so you know it isn't that bad. About 6,700 feet in 129 miles.

Here is the website and graphs can be found on my website .

Good luck to all and have a great 2007 season of Ultra Riding!!!

Voltaire! This one on the 20th is no different than what we were aiming for yesterday (unless you count the extra elevation gain)...it's just another unsupported double metric!

the 200k doesn't seem THAT bad, I might be game for this one. The others will require more training for me though.

Are Aero bars allowed for these rides?

I hear that if you wear your brevet while shopping in Trader Joe's, you get 20% of any puchase of Brie.

(I avoided the "Raspberry Brevet" joke, but feel it coming)

That's exactly why I'm doing this...I'll feel better about Butterfield if I get a taste of the climbing first.

I don't believe trains are allowed on brevets, but I would be happy to check the rules again.

L-A-Z-Y. Just use PBP as your reovery ride from Everest and/or the 508. Gosh. And here I thought you were all that, and you can't even fit in a little itty-bitty brevet series. Not impressed!
I have now official asked to be shoved in the path of an oncoming car...all in the name of training.

tooo bad Jason, I'd thought you'd be all over this with the local starting spot. I'm going to try and get some more serious rides in so I can do this one. I think I can do 130miles w/o too much of a prob with no major climbs.

How did I know you'd come back with that reply? I'm considering this one (but only this one, NOT the series) and I appreciate you putting up a thread on it! The only thing I don't like is the "non-stop" part.

They're not non-stop though! You have controls you have to check into, well that and the time limit is 13.5 hours for this one...there's plenty of time for you to stop if you need to.
