Perhaps people visit here because it is cohesive. Topics run fluid and connected here with people talking about all sort of things in all threads. I realize some people don't like that and wish for only jokes and personalities to remain in the Long *** Thread. But it seems the majority can't stick to that because a) we're all human with personalities and senses of humor and b) we are all getting to know each other and have experiences and jokes/advice/comments to share. But that doesn't mean that any member on here (the whole forum) can't jump right in. I'd say a good deal of that 88% is from the lurker constituency!

I even started a thread in December inviting other members outside so cal to introduce themselves.

So, sorry, I can't agree with you. Regional forums are an opportunity for riders in the same area to connect, and if you look at our average viewer number, it is roughly 35 viewers at any given time. We aren't excluding or taking away from the forum in any way, shape or form.
i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. i actually picked up some good info in the fluids thread, but i would never have thought to seek out that information in the so. cal subforum. i stumbled across it only after it was moved to the training\nutrition forum.

i think of the forum oganization in terms of searching. logically speaking, if someone is doing research on fluid intake (to keep using this example) and wanted to find out what people are doing, where is the most logical place they would look? not so. cal i can assure you of that. the most logical place would be the training\nutrition forum. so, in that respect, i think misplaced threads actually do a disservice to BF as a whole.

anyway, that's neither here nor there. the thread move debate has been going on for years, and will probably always continue. so, it's really not that productive to argue about it.

*and, for the record, it really doesn't bother me that much. i was definitely not the person that reported the thread. i've actually never done that before, except for spam.

Oh, no worries, Mo'. I just do NOT want to offend or miscommunicate to Joe or any other Mod on here. I don't view them as "punishers" or the "authority." They are cylists and part of the community who are just making sure all goes smoothly. But I do think someone asked the thread to be moved. And who knows, maybe it wasn't a vendetta at all, but just someone who wanted it in training/nutrition! Regardless, I'd like the thread to be moved back here to So Cal.

Yes; quite a few of us actually sent PMs to Joe. Myself and Caligurl included. Joe responded to the forum that he was instructing his mods to leave the community forums (especially those complainers in the SoCal forum) alone.

Has he brought on new mods since then that might not have received that information?

You realize joe is the admin of the site and constantly has to work on the servers and maintaining the site. There's no way he can monitor socal to the frequency it would require. The way I see it socal doesn't need any moderating other than Jschen. Everyone here is an adult, other than maximan. I've never seen anything get out of hand in socal. You could always talk to joe about instating a few moderators that only can moderator over the socal subforum.

Everyone vote, and have someone be a subforum moderator for socal.

Perhaps you should title your threads in such a way that most of the moderators would avoid them? I wonder if the "fluid"s on a bike piqued their interests?

Good point, John, but again, I posted THIS thread to get feedback from Joe or a Mod as to what the ground rules are for ALL of us in So Cal. I did not post it to argue and I hope my tone isn't coming across argumentative.

The Mod who emailed me was very nice and kept a link in here so that we can find the thread. But my issue is that someone requested that the thread be moved to begin with, and I would just like clarification, on a fair and equal basis, as to why one thread would be moved over another similar thread in this subforum.

I don't think that we should have to do that though. I think that the soCal community that we have here is pretty unique, in that we generate more actual face to face interaction than any of the other subforums. It's natural that we go off topic and I agree with those who have said that they like to discuss things with people from their area.

m.e., did you see the post from Thomson with the link directed toward Joe's post? I have confidence that this will be resolved soon.

Thanks, Tiff. Me, too. I'm just trying to make what I think is a valid point. I'm not communicating well, I suppose. This isn't about the Mod who moved the thread - it's about why would the thread be moved to begin with? - and I'd like that out in the open (which is why I didn't just keep this as a PM between the Mods and me).

It takes all of 2 seconds to open the thread and see what it's about.

No, it shouldn't matter, I'm just saying that if the topic sounds boring to a mod they're less inclined to read it. I've moderated forums before, some that had rules against most everything, others that were almost a complete free-for-all, and if the subject didn't look suspicious and didn't interest me a lot of times I wouldn't even read it.

Personally, I don't want to go and talk about cold weather gear in the Winter Cycling Forums, and I really don't want to take about Road Bike related stuff in it's respective forum, either, as I feel the Socal forum is more helpful in general, and yous people are in the same position I am. It's nice that the folks biking in the arctic circle can add their two cents when I'm asking about cold weather gloves, but I'm sure that we aren't talking about the same thing.

I understand where you're coming from, but at the same time, I don't want to have to choose my words carefully in fear that a mod might move my thread. You either let us post whatever we want, or don't...but we shouldn't have to tread lightly.

+100000000000!!!! the annonymity of the internet does weird things to people sometimes...makes them overly sensitive or exactly the opposite(raging a-holes...). i for one will NOT walk on eggshells! i WILL post whatever i want to in any forum that it is applicable! and fluid intake/cold weather gear/food is different for so cal that just about any other place in the country!!! so leave us alone!!!

or something like that....just sayin'.....

Being a somewhat newb to road cycling and the forums, my thoughts probably aren't worth much, but I strongly echo the sentiments of preferring to seek advice from people whom I've met/ridden with in person or have a strong likelihood to do so.

It's a simple matter of trust and community - I trust their opinions over that of a faceless Internet moniker located miles away. I've scanned through various posts of interest in the main forum, and while avoiding any sort of generalization, I've found that some of them are marked with personal attacks or baseless opinions (i.e. I heard from a girlfriend's grandma's gardener's barber's stripper's nanny that such-and-such saddle is good). I've also found some useful information as well, and try to contribute whenever I am able to offer firsthand experience (equipment, ride reports, car stuff, etc.). With that being said, if I were to solicit opinions about fluids, whether external, internal, bodily, etc., my first inclination would be to post in the SoCal forum as it adds a bit of weight knowing that a particular recommendation/suggestion is coming from someone I personally know and respect.

And regarding people who might be searching "fluids" and come across a post in the SoCal forum -there has never been a stipulation that one must reside or be physically located in the Southern California region in order to contribute, post, joke around, etc., etc. - there seems to be a sentiment of open-arms welcoming when it comes to people who don't live in SoCal, and I am confident that it will continue judging by the ease of personalities of those that make up this wonderful community.
