The art of the snot rocket
After yesterdays Stage Coach Century I think it is a topic to discuss and share thchniques. I know Brandy wants to learn, so share your secrets.:D

:roflmao:  :roflmao:
I can't wait for the recommendations to come pouring in!!! :D |
Suck it up your nose and bring it through the mouth.
Spit the biggest green loogy on the ground. Everyone will be disgusted. :) |
As noted on the other thread.

I did figure out that it is much tougher to get an effective rocket in the wind.:o :o :o |

I think this thread should be moved. Only question is where? hmmm... "Winter Cycling" or "Training and Nutrition?"
:D |
My snots leave my nostril in spray form so I always spit them out instead. One extra step involved re-routing the snots but that is my preferred method.

The #1 rule is:
Check before you blow. Blowing snot on yourself is nasty. Having somebody else's snot on you is ... |

Proper technique is essential. First, you need to build up a good head of steam by blowing out of your mouth first, just a little, and then close your mouth and one nostril (with your finger of course) and transfer the energy to your nose, there by making a powerful one stage rocket. If you don’t clear your face, then what’s the point? Most of all you must commit, half measures simply will not do.
Good luck and good rockets. |
One etiquette (sp) rule especially if riding in a group is to check whose behind you and move to the left side if possible otherwise move to the back of the bunch and then do you thang. Otherwise there is no difference in blowing your nose normally except that your doing each nostril seperately. This allows for better pressure so the speak. Just close one side and blow, forcefully. The more snot buildup the better - ugly thought but it's true. So to recap:
1) Turn head to the left 2) Close the right nostril 3) Blow 4) Turn head to the right 5) Close the left nostril 6) Blow I've tried blowing each nostril when turning my head one way but the "closer" nostril's stuff always seemed to end up on my bike. YMMV... Ian In SD

If I can add to Ian's instructions...
The faster you are going, the better the wind helps your cause. Slower speeds means a bigger likelihood of snot shrapnel on your face or clothes. If it's cold weather snottage (the watery kind) a word of warning... the more often you launch, the faster you nasal passages seem to fill the vacancy. Good luck, Brandy! |
There is also much more to the main charge than is seen in the daylight. On a recent night ride we had just cleared one of the wooden bridges on the SART and I was about 15 yards ahead of my buddies, so I let loose a rocket, only to hear a scream behind me. My buddies Nightrider lit up the “mist” that goes along with the rocket. It seems there is much more to the snot rocket than can be seen, there must be some residual “propellant” left over from the launch.

I just make sure no one's behind me to catch the mist. I also let mine build up a bit before commiting to launch.
If I'm at a stop, I can actually land both rockets on top of one another. My aim has gotten quite excellent lately. |
Geeze, does everyone in socal have a cold right now?
|
this is tooo funny!!!

Nobody's brought up the elbow tuck. No wonder you get snot on your sleeves. Tuck that elbow in close to the body.
|
Are most of you experts in clearing your throats? (spitting)
