Close encounters of the animal kind: Getting chased..

SURPRISE: EVERY SUNDAY A NEW TOPIC!!!!!!!

My last thread regarding "Flocked Jersey's" is now for your eye's only.
I'm bored with it so I'm moving to another topic:

Everyone here has to have a story about getting chased by a dog. Please post it.
If it wasn't a dog, that's even better.

Geez, too many dog stories to count in my neighborhood. There is of course the time I went head-on with a stopped (not parked) car because I swerved when looking down at a yapping dog that got very close. That was fun. But getting chased? I'd say at least once a month.

I once got chased by some mean ghetto dogs in Elysian Park. They just snarled and barked alot, but luckily i didn't get bit that time.

Last year by my house, I was climbing up my street and crossed paths with a mean 'hood dog (usually fenced in, but barks and jumps like crazy whenever I come home from a ride) that was out loose on the street, it barked wildly, chased me up my hill and OUCH! bit me on my calf, leaving a bleeding chomp mark.

I was furious. I got home and called the city Animal Control Dept. 1 hour later an officer came out, took my report, took some pics of the bite mark. She then went down the hill, and captured the dog (it was still running around) Justice!

I went to my doc to have the bite checked out.

My buddy Kermit and I were doing a night ride after work at Lake Hodges, just our normal 18mile hammer session. We get down by the lake on the paved road for about 1/2 a mile and outta the corner of my eye on the right side I see something running almost next to us, about 6-8ft on the right side then outa no where this big assdeer CROSSES in front of us!!!! About 2 bike lengths in front of us LOL We hammer the brakes see it's eyes staring at us and our lights, as we slowed down a bit we turned and our lights follow it as it jumps in the bushes near the water line. Scared the $hit outa us but was funny too!!

I've had two dogs chase me. Both were inside a fenced yard. Both dove under the fence through holes to chase me... One was a puppy probably wanting to play, one was a larger farm dog. Needless to say, i hammered it both times until they stopped chasing.

The skunk of it

I had just bought my carbon bike, and was testing it on a 4 mile loop close to my house. I had just made the 5th corner and just got straight when a skunk ran across the road. My first thought was to get on the brakes but something told me to get across the path of it first. I stayed in the crank and sure enough I ran over the poor skunk. We'll, my thought (which happened really quick) was stand on that pedal and hope for the best. Well, I didn't go down, the skunk didn't get caught in the front stem (man, that would have been really really bad) and I somehow got ahead of the smell. I think I broke my lap record on that lap cause I didn't want to stop. I went on around and stopped at the house and I could smell the fresh air. I never did get sprayed and will always stay out of the little animals way when I can. I went back the next morning and I didn't see the critter so I think he made it all the way across the road...he will probably look both ways before crossing that spot too...

On vacation at Family Camp in the foothills below Kings Canyon. Very rural. Only one main road in and out of the 6 mile long valley. Vicki and I were barked at by a BIG dog behind a fence...until he bolted under the fence. Yow! hammered like crazy.

I was doing a solo morning ride, same area. There is one lonely farmhouse several miles out. Two dogs looked up from about 50 yards away across the field, saw me and said to each other "Let's go!" I knew I could easily outrun them and did but.....I had to return the same way! Two blocks later, got stopped by a herd of cows on the road. so now I was trapped between the cows and the dogs. Got past the cows to another herd of cows....geez.

On the return trip, I went very slow and quietly towards the dog area, preparing to do my best Lance sprint......slow.....quiet.....slow....quiet...heart slamming in my chest....waiting...and.....

nothing! they were gone!

Same area...came upon some horses on the road...will NEVER ride past horses again..Always walk the bike. Man they took off and I thought I was going to get crushed!

I was riding along with a buddy of mine when all of sudden we hear this high pitched yapping and this brown bullet which was later identified as a miniature dachshund came tearing out of it's yard and ran onto the road to try and chase us down. We were doing 16-17 and it was trying to catch us... didn't quite get there, but those little feet blazing back and forth and the belly/back flexing like crazy gave us a good laugh. He gave up after awhile...

My coolest animal chase involved a deer chase.

Featherly Park Bike trail... years ago... I'm riding along and a deer comes out of nowhere, scares the dog-water out of me, jumps right in front of me and starts flying down the trail.

This guy was quick. He kept looking to the side to keep an eye on me.

What would you do? Same as I did... sprint and try to ride his wheel.

Yeeeooww! Never been that close to the business end of a deer before... pretty scary sight.

I couldn't believe I was able to stay with him. This went on for about 1/2 mile... yes, I'm sucking his wheel...Then I decided to pass him... thought it would be a great bike shop story.

I went for it. When I got right next to him he freaked, launched himself about 10 to 15 feet ahead of me in a split second and started hammering. COULD NOT BELEIVE HOW FAST THIS MOTHER WAS GOING.

I think he got tired of me and, in one blinding move, jumped off the bike trail and took off back into the brush....

There's a little mop of a dog on my usual "get at least an hour in b4 the sun goes down" route. Stupid thing chases me, and follows me off the residential street where it lives and onto a MUCH higher traffic road. If I'm feeling nice, I'll lead it back home, but sometimes I just spray it down and hope for the best. Stupid people leaving their stupid pets in harms way.

Got chased by a couple dogs on my morning training ride yesterday. These two dogs are *always* loose, and usually give chase. A few weeks ago they caused a crash during a group ride, fortunately only one guy went down, and no one was hurt.

I called animal control yesterday, gave a description of where the house was (street, nearest cross street) and they wouldn't do anything w/o an address. As if I have time to look for an address when I'm trying to avoid the frickin' dogs...

I guess that's what passes for "public service" around here.

I was chased by a swarm of gnat like insects last summer. I guess my super bright lime green alert shirt attracted the little buggers.

I was also chased by a bee which ended up landing on my shoulder and hitching a ride for 15 miles (I was wearing the lime green alert shirt again). I got home brushed him off and went inside. Minutes later I felt something on the side of my shirt so I go to pick it off and it turns out to be another bee which proceeds to sting my middle finger. Fun times.

We (my younger brother and I) always ride out into the country, so we see all sorts of animal life. Normally things like horses and cows don't pose much of a threat. However farm dogs are never on leashes. I've only been riding about a year, and have more dog experiences than I want to. Out there, they never see people, let alone two tasty lycra-wrapped sausages riding past 'their property'. Most of the time yelling "no" and pedaling as fast as possible gets away from situations. Only one dog was scary, a rotweiler/pitbull/man-eater/land shark with massive teeth type of dog. He was slow though. A few moments of fight or flight instinct put a safe distance on that dog.

On the same ride as the encounter with the Great White Shark dog, we rode past another farmhouse with a big wrap-around porch. A black-lab came flying off the porch with a boy (probably around 8 years old) chasing after him. The boy was repeatedly calling for "lucky" to come home. We, out of instinct, just started hammering away to get a lead on the dog. 22, 23, 24mph - which is pushing it for 2 rookie cyclists - and we kept going, and going, and going. Looking back, the dog hadn't given up. He was not close behind, but still following. We eased up a bit, but kept going. So did Lucky. At about a mile away, we decided to let him catch up, as being a black lab, he probably just wanted to run/play (my brother and I had black labs when we were growing up). So when he got close enough to us, he just ran beside. We stopped since the dog wasn't a threat. After petting him and squirting some water from a bottle at his now-2-foot-long-tounge we started on our way, but the dog wouldn't go home. We yelled at him, told him "no," "go home," "bad dog," etc. Lucky would not go home. So, we turned back and had the dog follow us back to the farmhouse, where a very upset 8 year old boy was waiting for his dog. The boy's father thanked us for bringing the dog back and chatted for a minute - surprised to see 2 roadies out 20 miles from civilization. We decided that since we already turned around it was time to head in.

Knowing the great white man-eater was still ahead, we were able to get up to a high speed ahead of time and fly past that house, so the dog never had a chance. He barely made it from the house to the street before giving up. I think next season I may need to carry some sort of mase/pepper-spray or something, just incase.

Couple weeks ago I was looping around the neighborhood to get my mileage up to an even 50 when a little foo-foo dog came flying at my wheel from an open garage. The dog couldnt have been any bigger than an average Detroit rat and looked like a cotton ball shot out of a cannon. The funniest thing though was the equally foo foo owner in a skirt and heels tries to chase her pup down. I took off and never looked back...

AS far as other animals, i've gotten at least 3 squirrels and at least that many lizards on my rides. In fact Iwas looking for some stickers that I could put on Medone sort of like airplane pilots do for kills !

the only thing that has "chased" me was a mouse. the little critter came out of some hole in the curb and kept up with me for a few feet. then it jumped from the gutter to the top of the curb and took another leap onto my frame and then to my right leg. its little claws scooted up my leg and i was able to brush it off before it took a recon mission up my shorts.

it was a rather odd encounter. lucky for me i'm not afraid of rodents, otherwise i would have crashed right then and there in fear.

i have slowly shadowed some coyote in silverlake at night as they wander through front yards. that's fun, if you like coyote. they didn't seem to mind me. but i did ring the bell on my bike when they got close to my house. that told my 3 german shepherds that daddy was home. that told the coyote that my house was off limits.

other than those encounters i've run into random skunks, possums, and raccoons. the skunks i try not to startle.

i do have a squirrel story, but i should post that at "yardworkforums.net" since it happened during some yardwork

last summer i saw snakes on the little hills in Fullerton, I don't know if they were rattlesnakes or just bull snakes. but they never chased me, maybe that's the real reason cyclists have shaved legs, so the snakes in the road don't think there's a big juicy rat coming right at them on a bicycle.
