Midnight Ridazz is fairly cool in my book. I've ridden it more than a few times, including the really big 1200-riders-or-so rides. Granted, there are a lot of messenger wannabes in that group, but there's also a lot of BMXers, cruisers, roadies, and even a few 1800's style big-wheel bikes.

Ultimately, we're all posers in one way or another. I mean... they put on their capris, tight shirts, Campy hats, and messenger bags, and we put on our team kits and hunker down on our full carbon rigs.

*shrug* No big difference, really. (And yes, exceptions to every rule, blah blah blah.)

Ridazz is cool, though.

Maybe they're carrying air mail.

I bring an empty bag with me to events like that for... FREE GIVEAWAY STUFF !!!! Got me an Amgen bike bell (and two more for my friends) and a lot of other stuff. My friends thought I was silly for walking around with an empty backpack, until they found it convenient to load me up like a small pack mule.

You have made me see the light!! No more posing! I'll wear only cargo shorts from target and I've taken off my chain! One speed was more than I was worthy of!. I'll go to hell before I stop carrying my canvas bag. Gotta put my lunch stuff somewhere.

Well the God of cycling has spoken, and he had implemented a cycling code of ethics which is to include:

- no "retro/2nd hand clothing..."
- no "fixed gear bikes with empty messenger bags..."
- no "funny looks on their faces..."
- no "pretending to be some kind of cult..."

I work at one of the Los Angeles Community Colleges, and there is a sort of... fad... if you will, regarding the fixed gear bikes, etc.

To be perfectly blunt the "cult" thing isn't that at all. Most of these kids are students and don't have the $$$ to go out and buy the kind of bike you probably have. They also have this crazy idea called recycling. They see something positive in recycling a classic 20 year old Olmo steel frame picked up for 50 bucks on Craigslist into something special... one of a kind.

And, if you must know, it's also an "in your face" to all the fat, balding, middle age guys...the ones with the little stud earring, the token tattoo's, who drive Porsche Carrera's, and have lots of bucks to blow on trivial stuff...the guys who buy Lance's ride because they have the stupid notion that a 16lb bike will make them fast, even though their gut hits the top tube and what they really need is a diet and a 22lb bike.

And you know what? Before you point fingers at what you seem to consider "unconventional", think how utterly ridiculous RECUMBANT bicycles look!!!

God, everytime I see one I double over laughing. Geek city. Remember the scene in "Beverly Hills Cop" when Eddy Murphy cracks up walking down the street??? Same feeling......

I can see the following post on some fixed gear forum:
"So a group of the road bike posers popped up, all dressed up in Spandex and brightly colored jerseys from Performance that advertise laundry detergent and hanging out at Starbucks. They were riding around on carbon bikes with empty water bottles on their bikes...Where did they come from.

They ride around with funny looks on their faces, like they need to take a dump."

Out of all the destructive "wannabe" groups that a youth could belong to, you actually make a post about this one (granted this IS an old thread)? Damn them for not driving around in oversized, gas guzzling pickups or becoming gang bangers.

They get together, ride, race, hang out and socialize...sounds like a any cycling club worth their salt.

My messenger bag is empty on the way to the grocery store, art supply shop, bike shop, etc...I also don't like riding around with my wallet, keys, and phone in my pockets so guess where they stay during my rides around town?

As a man with tree stumps for legs, I don't quite get the skinny leg pants thing...but whatever.

I really hope that fixies continue to be growing trend. All the benefits of cycling apply whether you have one gear or 30.

Lastly, why does everyone make such a big deal about fixies? Why not make a big deal about all the "unskilled cyclists" riding beach cruisers around So.Cal.? Sometimes I feel like it is OK to take a big gulp of Haterade when discussing fixie riders.

Fixed riders in general are creative, you know....the artsy type. Some are simply crazy, like me.
