Conditions on GMR?

I'm wondering if anyone has been up on GMR since the recent snow . Is there snow and/or ice on the road?

I'm going to ride GMR this Sat. (Mar. 3) with a small group led by Teri Fitzgerald, starting at 9:00 AM from Boulder Springs. I know there are other rides this Sat. but anyone from BF who would like to join us is certainly welcome. This will not be a "hammer" ride, at approx. 2-1/2 hr. from start to Village, but of course everyone is welcome to ride at their own speed.

We will slow and watch for ice in the shady areas, esp. at the higher elevations.

Rick / OCRR

Hi Rick.....I'm in L.A. and I can see Baldy covered in snow. I haven't been up there in a while but I can assure you that there will be some snow and ice on GRR, enough to make riding somewhat unpleasant. This has usually been the case when you see fresh snow on Baldy.
GMR should be just fine to the top.

I think the temps are supposed to go up pretty high on Saturday (75 degrees?), which means some of GRR may melt when the sun hits it, but the top portion will have ice in the shade for sure, especially considering the recent rain and snow. But GMR should be great and may not be too cold. I heard it was freezing up there last week.

Hi Rick. I think vertical bob and some others were up there Sunday. You could PM him or I'll ask him to respond to this thread next time I talk to him.

I rode up to the village last Sunday (never ran ito VB), and yes it was cold..... Hit ice patches about 5 miles or so before the village. The wind was also very strong. On the decent (not GMR) I wobbled once way more that I was comfortable with, and a couple other times that were not as bad. These were just infrequest gusts though.

Sunday was obviously before the Monday/Tuesday rains, so its likley worse now. This said, were are planning to do it again on Sunday morning at 7:00am from Valley Center/Serria Madre

Thanks for the input everyone! If it gets too bad we'll just turn around, but it sounds at least like it's worth a try as long as we remain watchful for ice on the road.

I think that you will have a beautiful day up there tomorrow. It was nice last Sunday but cold, very very cold. Lucky we had just about everything covered up. I'll be up there tomorrow hoping for a warmer day, I think it will be fine. Look for me on a White I.C.E. [bicycle].

Change your mind about Mount Gleason? Do you think the wind will be an issue on GRR?

Hell I don't know what to do. They are predicting high winds everywhere so I will probably go up the sheltered side on A.C. and try to make it to Gleason.

John,

If last Sunday was an indication, and it is supposed to be more windy tomorrow, I think it will be a factor on GRR. However, as I had never gone further than 2 miles or so past GMR, for all I know, it may not have even been considered windy last Sunday by those who frequent it. I wobbled once like never before, and it was during a gust from my side -- kinda spooked me.

Nothing quite like a strong side wind when you are doing 35-40 mph down a mountain road.

Yes John, V.Bob and Dave,

You are all correct! It was very windy on GRR today, but not so much on GMR. Several times I was almost stopped in my tracks by unexpected high-fast winds. By "unexpected" I mean that I would be cycling in apparently dead air one moment, and get hit by a full head-wind blast a moment later.

Then as I would round a corner, the mountain would block the wind, and it was pretty much dead air again. Weird!

This was pretty much all on GRR during and after the start of the 3-1/2 mile climb (you know the one!). However stupid it might have been, I carried on regardless, and did make it to the Village whilst staying upright the whole time.

On the one-mile descent to Mt.Baldy road there was a strong headwind. I usually descent at 35+ on that drop, but today I was lucky to see 25. On the flip side, I had a v.strong tailwind when climbing back out of the Village! At least a couple of mph faster than usual on that climb!

Going back there were still gusts (front, left, right) and the occasional tailwind, but the 2nd part of GRR and GMR were all fine. I had a long-sleeve base layer on top, plus a short-sleeve jersey, shorts w/no leg or knee warmers, and while it was very coolish at times, I was never seriously cold. A light wind-shell would have been good, but oh well . . . it was quite warm when we started from Glendora at 9:00 AM.

Ice? Yes, but only one patch, all the way across the road, probably 4 ft. wide. Outbound I didn't see it soon enough so just stayed straight and rode over it no problem. On the return (on a climb) I slowed down and walked the bike over it, so overall, no problem!

Sounds like you had a good time, Rick. Thanks for sharing. I don't know where Bob went, maybe we'll hear from him later. I just did a 60 mile club ride around the Rose Bowl.

I just went as far as GRR and then descended little GMR to East Fork and out 39. I had a tailwind on the first part of East Fork, and didn't really face headwinds until I was descending 39-- the climby bits on the return to Azusa were pretty sheltered. It was chilly descending little GMR, but other than that it was bare arm weather.

At the last minute I descided to ride in the Santa Monicas, at least it was warm. I had planned on a hard day and I got it. Went out Mulholland to Little Syc. to Yerba to Cotharin to Deer Creek. Back on Encinal ,Mulholland, STUNT, and Mulholland. 10,800 ft. Ugh. Gotta get in shape if I'm gonna try B.A. I started out with Cristie and turned her on to the Forum. Now there's a trooper. Rode with Rick on Cotharin he's a 508 guy. I know too many of those guys .

Hi Dangerman,

Tom the sweeper was at work as usual on Sat. so the road was pretty clean. Of course, there are always the rocks that fall down the hillsides after Tom has moved on to the next section, but overall it was very clean.

Just that one bit of ice, as noted above.

No obvious construction. The one part you mention is all finished, a good (new pavement) lane in each direction.
