L.A. Wheelmen trainer June 9

This is the best of the Wheelmen's trainer series. Loops from Encanto Pk in Duarte to La Canada and up the 2 till it meets Hwy 39 then a screaming decent back to the park through the Sheep Wilderness. 89 miles 8900 ft. This ride always brings out some very good riders. Not to be missed. www.lawheelmen.org:)

Last year was unbearably hot and I didn't do it. Anybody want to start at 7 or 7:30 and just let the fast guys catch us later.

Cathy, you ARE one of the fast guys(gals). But yes, I quit this ride last year (turned around on AC) as I overheated. If that occurs again, I'm out. And I'm just kidding - I'd be more than willing to start at 7am to beat the heat.

What you gals don't realize is that last year once we climbed up from the Valley floor it was much cooler up there than down below. It's always cooler up there but I admit it was very hot last year and if it"s like that again I would start early. But, that's 2 weeks away, let's worry about next week up to the @#$%&* ski lifts.

I'm trying to get my friend to join us on both -- he wants to, if he has the time. He's training for the same summer trip I am, so we both want to get some climbing in.

I guarantee if you start at 7:00 NOBODY will catch you.
Yes, it was hot last year and I got sick on the climb to Cloudburst, might have had something to do with the fries at Newcome Ranch. The worst part of the heat was at the end (105 degrees) and it wouldn't matter when you started.

Hey John, I'm thinking that if I start at 7:30, I can get up to Red Box before it gets too hot (assuming it will be super hot that weekend - if not, I don't need to start any earlier), but I am not as fast as some of those guys (or you) and I'd rather beat the heat and wait around for others to catch me. I really hated that climb on AC last year in 104 degree weather.

Thanks for saying Hi last Saturday Jon as you smoked by, you looked in control of your destiny. Unless it's super hot [unlikely]I'll start at 8 with the group. Last year was a kinda freak year to be that hot in June. I remember riding over to A.C. in a cool drizzle in years past and climbing out of that into beautiful sunshine. I guess we can descide later on next week. This is a great ride, one year we even saw the big horn sheep.

Is this where we pass the gate and go down Hwy 39 back to the start?

I was in control untill I hit mile 70 and blew up. 4 hours it took me to get to mile 70 and 1 hour to get to the top of Heartbreak 6 painful miles in ONE hour! I ended up with 6 hours and 32 min. not bad but it could have been a lot better.

"L.A. Wheelmen trainer" - as usual for me in the last 2+ month, I will be there.
And, I will do the one on June 2 too (June 2 - my map shows that it will be about 7,000ft over the 116miles route).

This looks like a great ride Bob, but what basis is the 8900 ft of vert. determined by. I ran the route on Topo last night and came up with over 13600 ft.

JustMe, where did you get the route from; it not yet in the lawheelmen site? Get me the "L on x, R on y" and I will map it in my site; I usualy get the elevation a bit higher than V.bob alt. I notices that V.bob alt. always show less than Garmin shows. This is what makes Vertical Bob even more vertical

Well, V.bob alt. was reading pretty much the same as my garmin at Sea to Summit. So, I'm praying V.bob alt. is correct on this one or V.bob may be more VERTICAL than I'm willing to be.

Over the years I've done this ride at least 15 times and it has always shown between 8300 and 8700 ft. on my Cateye altimiter. The Wheelmen rate it at 8300. I got 8900 last year I guess cause I went back down a little a couple of times to check on a friend. Believe me its not 13,000+ .Until the Garmins came out I was usually reading a little higher than others with different altimiters leading me to add 10% to my vertical century. Now the Garmins read more than mine ,so whatever. It is however, a hard ride with a big payoff in endorphins.
