SoCal Sunday and Bummer Flats, who else?

Today started out like any other Sunday. Supposed to meet Lucas (BF'er) at the Honda Center so that he could ride to the coast with us. He wasn't there so we figured maybe he slept in. While we were stopped another couple that we usually talk to at the beach stop went by, Aimie and Ihn. Lucas was a no-show so we hit the road after a few minutes of fighting with the homeless guys trying to get them out of the potties. Hey, it was Gina for once!

So we're rolling thru the 405 (605?)fwy tunnel and on the other side is Aimie an Ihn with a flat. So we stop and aid them with my frame pump. Then we continue to the coast. When we arrive, Lucas is at the rest stop rolling up a flatted tube. Yup, he had one too. Was on the SART headed towards the HC when he flatted.

So I'm really happy that I was able to help somone with a flat. Maybe that would keep the evil puncture spirits from getting me. Well, we return to Imperial, load up the trucks and drive home. When I go to unload the bikes, THEY GOT ME! Sure enough a flat in the rear. Well maybe the evil spirits were kind enough to wait till I got back to the truck before they called my number!

So everybody we talked with today had a flat. WHO ELSE?

I had two flats yesterday, Beanz. Messed up my ride as I was trying to get in some healthy miles before I went to work.

Sorry Beanz. Can't get a flat if my bike doesn't leave the garage.

Since I'll be riding tomorrow hopefully it won't happen then.

Nah, I work for myself. I just had to cut a planned 60-mile ride into a 30-miler.

Ok, how about I ask but just keep riding like I didn't hear them?

Don't really think I could do that though.

Yup, that was Me 'n' Gina!

I saw two guys riding together. One looked at me as if he recognized me. I looked at him but didn't recognize him. I thought maybe it was a BF'er.

Hmmm, maybe under the 5 fwy near the stadium.

Yep. I am the Lucas, Beanz referred to. I rarely have flats, but today was just an unbelievable day as far as flats on the SART are concerned, especially hearing that Beanz also flatted at the end of his ride.

I do want to take the opportunity to thank all the people who asked if I needed help, or if I had all that I needed to take care of the flat. I did have all that I needed, and I always carry everything to fix a flat. There was a gentleman that actually turned his bike around after riding past me, just to ask if all was well. I do not know if the guy frequents SoCal BikeForums, but if he does, this is to say thank you again.

Regards,

That's one thing about the SART. Always help offers form riders.

My husband had a flat, plus tore his tire. Tough when you're trying to beat the heat in the desert.

Not today but last weekend we got our first flat on the tandem. We had picked up some small thorns that went right through the front Gatorskin causing a sloowww leak. Ended up pinch flatting on Las Posas heading out to PCH. Fixed that but on the return trip we were sprayed with pink webbing!! WTF!!?? I had looked away at, umm, the scenery along PCH and ran over some fresh bubble gum. It was like getting hit with silly string from end to end of our tandem. Thought I cleaned it all up but found more residue today.

Desert heat Sheeesh! I do flat more in the heat when it softens the tire rubber. I can't imagine the desert!

At the point where I passed you and did a double take, all I was thinking about was the turkey/avocado sandwich waiting for me at Jans Health Bar in Huntington Beach..

I didn't have any flats yesterday thanks to my true blue Gatorskins (I even rode over patches of glass accidentally! Those things are tough!), but I had two near misses. Vertical Bob and I did our usual Rose Cafe over Sepulveda Pass and on the way, I thought he was turning right (although he gave no indication that he was) and I started to turn right into him. Fortunately, with him saying "Watch out!" we were able to pull out. Then in Santa Monica, a Matrix turned right directly in front of us as we were taking off from a stoplight. Thing is, we were beside them for over 20 seconds, but the driver was clearly oblivious! We were able to pull out that too, but I was so close to hitting that car that I can say definitively that I am not impressed with the design on the Matrix and that will not be my car of choice when I go to buy a car!

I've had about 100 flats in the last month...

That should keep the flat tire gods happy for a while.

No flat yesterday, but maybe I satisfied the flat tire gods with the one I had last weekend. But the wheel alignment gods got me instead. My front wheel was out of alignment and causing a lot of vibration. After my flat last weekend, I took the bike to the closest bike shop (not my regular LBS) and they said my stem was too tight. They loosened the stem, but knocked the wheel out of alignment in the process. I had to cut my ride with the SFVBC short to take the bike to my regular LBS.

I'm glad I didn't take the advice of the other shop last week when they also told me that all of my brake cables were too short and needed to be replaced.
