My new neighbor rides. Sweet bike too!

So we're mostly moved in to our house in Pasadena (I was about to go through internet withdrawals), and as I was waiting for the gas company to hook us up on Tuesday, the neighbor (Kevin) across the street comes out with his sweet Cervelo and matching kit. I really need to find the box with my cycling gear so I can start riding again!!!

Congrats on your move, Brian! Now, we're neighbors too (figuratively speaking). Invite Kevin to the next Chantry Flats ride.

We're RENTING a 540 sq.' 1+1 house with almost no yard. We might be able to buy a house when our joint income reaches 6 figures.

ME, I'll make sure to invite him. You might be happy to know that I haven't seen any sign of a wife of kids at his house yet.

There are lots of cozy little old bungalows in these areas. I would prefer it over an apartment.

Yep. 1 bedroom, 1 bath, and a galley kitchen. 538 sq. ft. to be exact. It is indeed in the Bungalow Haven area, and I chose it over our previous luxury apartment which was a 2+2 with 800+ sq. ft. The dog needs a yard, which is the main reason.

More good news, Kevin is a physical therapist who used to suffer from ITBS (and is quite sure that's what I have) so I'll see if he can show me the stretches better so I don't end up needing surgery like he did! I might join him on a recovery ride, but he races and is probably too fast for me on most days.

Any tips on finding affordable housing in Pasadena?

My brother and his wife will be moving there in the not-too-distant future. Pasadena is expensive, and postdocs don't exactly rake in the cash. He rides too, so maybe you'd have another neighbor who rides (Sorry, no Cervelo though. Grad students don't exactly rake in the cash either.).

Riding distance to Caltech would be ideal, if there is such a thing as affordable housing that's not so far from work that he wouldn't have to drive.

Well, as I said, we're renting, but we found the place on http://www.realtor.com/ which lists both sales and leases. Our place will be up for sale when we move out in a year or two, but we'd only buy it if we decided not to have children.

It all really depends on what you consider "affordable". The market starts at about 1/2 million almost everywhere around here. *sigh* Most places near or below that are in the bad parts of town. But I am in an OK area, and about 10 miles from Cal Tech.

Well, I was referring to renting. Seriously doubt they'll be able to buy a place in that area.

Just thought maybe there was a site, kinda like westsiderentals.com in LA, that non-locals might not know of.

The best thing to do if you can is to drive around and call/look in person. My wife and I were looking back in 2005 as I was going to start at Fuller in the fall. Westside Rentals didn't net us much luck, and we were exasperated from driving around/looking fruitlessly. A lot of the places were older and had no central A/C (I need A/C!!) or no covered parking, etc., etc. - Then we found our place on Madison just south of Cordova - 1100sf 2 bedroom with underground parking, had just been redone. We lived there happily for almost a year and a half before we moved to Arcadia because our daughter's toys/equipment was taking over the darn place. That and I was sick of working on my cars at 2am in the carport. We were paying $1500/mo. for ours - loved the location, though. 5 minute walk to Lake, Paseo Colorado, etc., etc. -

Growing up in Pasadena during my elementary school years, I am now wanting to kick my parents for selling the house we had lived in. Could have been sitting on a big pile right now, or better yet - I could be living in it.

Ahh, well we found ours on that site I listed. We're paying $1600/month, and our neighbors in a 2+1 are paying $2300 (but I think they get the yardwork and some utilities included)

As a landlord, I found craigslist to be the best place to list rentals. Westside rentals was not effective. So, If I were renting I would start with craigslist.
