Hwy 101 - Whom to complain to?
There's a stretch of Hwy 101 between in Carlsbad with a bike lane that's so chewed up it's barely rideable. I'd like to complain to someone about it, but I'm not sure who has jurisdiction - the city or the state. Can anyone help me on this?

Not State Highway; Try Local Agency
I assume you're referring to Carlsbad, San Diego County, California.
The street known variously as "Carlsbad Boulevard" or "Coast Highway 101" is not a State highway. I assume it is maintained by county or municipal agencies.
(According to the California Streets and Highways Code, Section 401, Route 101 ends at "Route 5 near Seventh Street in Los Angeles," and does not exist at all in San Diego County.)
If you are sure the location you are describing is within the City of Carlsbad, you might try the Street Maintenance Department, Public Works Division.

I believe that section is designated as "Historical Rt. 101".
See here: https://www.efgh.com/bike/old101.htm
I would start with the city. I know there is a section heading north through Leucadia that is really bad, but I rarely ride it.

Make sure to present it as a safety concern. The city usually isn't that concerned with "rough roads", but if they here "potential serious injury" and/or "possible lawsuit", they are usually quicker to respond. At least that's how my parents-in-law got the city to fix the sidewalk that was raised by tree roots.

I just sent the City of Carlsbad a message, written from the perspective of a driver worried about hitting a cyclist forced out into the right hand lane because of the poor condition of the bicycle lane. If there are any other forum members who use this route, it would be great if you could send them a message as well.

It's the southbound bike lane on Carlsbad Blvd (101), just north of Island Way.

As I pointed out in my letter, it's not as bad northbound, because it's downhill. But southbound, it's uphill, meaning a cyclist forced into the lane is going much, much slower than traffic.
Carlsbad in general doesn't seem to give much of a s%*t about their bike lanes along 101. At least they have them, unlike Leucadia, where there are none at all (I think that's about to change, though).
Thanks for contacting them, Grumpy!

Anyone can complain but no one wants to go out there and work on the road
stop being a slacker and do something. Seriously, why don't you go and volunteer to fix that side of the road?

What do you think we pay taxes for anyway? Last I heard, repair and maintenance of the roads was one of the things municipalities were responsible for.

Surely you jest. A slacker, eh. I work 60 hours a week, and pay taxes out the wazoo. I don't know squat about fixing asphalt. Is this a joke, or are you seriously suggesting I go out there with my bike and some ready-mix and try to fix the shoulder?

Well I don't see how you could sit there and judge the roads without personally going out and helping. You work, extensively, but you do not have an idea what it is like to be out there in 110F weather and having to fix a small stretch of road that isn't frequented as often as some other streets.
But why don't you go and volunteer? You know they will train you. What is the REAL reason?

We pay taxes to the fed to cover the interest that the government owes for borrowing money.

Get a grip, man. In my 59 years on this planet, I've probably done more stinking, hot, unpleasant jobs than you've even dreamed of. And now I pay tens of thousands of dollars a year in taxes for ever decreasing services. You're damned right I'm going to complain about that! And the last thing I'm going to do is pick up a shovel and go fix some road.
However, I'll be more than happy to send a letter to the mayor of your city, telling them you'll be volunteering for road crew work every weekend.

How many non-cyclist car drivers are even aware of the concept of "a cyclist forced out into the right hand land ..."? Answer: zip.
So your letter will likely be immediately identified as a "seminar writer" letter. And ignored (read "discarded").
Write as you, in your own voice. Otherwise the writing comes off as stilted and not real.

I'm pretty sure Carlsbad uses a tracking system where the email is forwarded to the appropriate party and that person has a set number of working days to respond. It may not get repaired quickly but you should get a response.

LOL, you crack me up! The "REAL" reason . . . Good job there, you exposed me! OK, I admit it, the REAL reason is that I think there are boogeymen hiding in the asphalt and I'm afraid of them.

I am quite serious. Are you now too good to pick up a shovel and fix roads? Have you ever heard of working together for the better good?

ovoleg, if you really think I'm going to argue with you or try to justify my life to you, then you're deluded. I don't see a very good outcome discussing things with someone who apparently believes that the only way roads get repaired is through acts of public charity.

What taxes do you pay that go and fix those roads? Please I want to know what you are paying tens of thousands of dollars in taxes a year for. I already told you what income tax pays, the debt the govt owes the federal reserve and the corrupt bankers that run it.
I am quite serious. Are you now too good to pick up a shovel and fix roads? Have you ever heard of working together for the better good?

If you go to the City of Carlsbad website, they have nice pie charts that show where their funds come from and how they are distributed. Another place you can look is the SANDAG site. Do some research before posting any other drivel. Repairing a road is a little more than shovelling some cold patch and compacting it with a pickup truck.

Cities get portions of gas taxes to do road repairs.
