Los Angeles Triathlon - 9/9/2007 - Anybody doing the bike only portion?

http://www.latriathlon.com/

$65 for the bike only portion, 24 mile route seen here:

http://www.routeslip.com/routes/59694

~700 feet of climbing.

I was planning on doing the olympic relay with my friends with me doing the bike portion. Unfortunately it seems like we may not be able to find anyone to run. If that happens, i'll just sign up for the bike portion. I remember afew people here expressed interest in the bike only portion a while back. The only problem is that it is kinda expensive for only 24 miles.

I'm thinking i might be able to do this on my fixed gear bike. 700 feet isn't much, but there are some interesting looking hills towards the end that i'm not sure about...

Looks like the purple lines goes from Venice, Fairfax, Wilshire and then up to Highland to Hollywood Blvd To Sunset. But what's that purple line that seems to go east parallel to Wilshire just north of Wilshire? It looks like it stops at Wilton.

I'm signed up for the Olympic distance tri, but am still on the fence whether to do the bike portion only. I haven't been training properly and to participate will take up most of my weekend (weekends are working days for me). Since I have a critical deadline the following week, I may just use Option 3 and blow the whole thing off entirely.
Man, I'm getting stressed just thinking about how to fit everything in.

I'm signed up to do the bike-only. Yeah it's blowing a whole weekend, but I need a weekend break. I'm curious how they do that - is it a mass-start event?

I originally signed up because a friend of mine was going to do the Olympic, but then he bailed.

That little extension along 6th had me confused as well at first. Apparently it's a little extra bit that the Olympic distance event has to do. It adds an extra 4 miles to the course.

As you go down Wilshire you turn left on Highland, then right on 6th. You go down 6th to Wilton where you make a U-turn and head back to Highland. Then when you get back to Highland you continue north along the rest of the course.

Be sure to "look cool" when making the turn around the Disney Hall.

Thanks to the road closures in Hollywood, many clients were late for their appointments this morning. One client was ticked off and made comment about stupid street closures and stupid bikers. I let his comment slide since he was talking about the triathletes...

So did anyone do this today?

I didn't realize there was a triathlon! I was riding to my bike path when I passed Venice Blvd. and I see the road was closed. It was pretty cool.

It kinda crossed my mind to just hop along and join the race,

Oh yes.. the bike only group was lined up right next to the exit of T1, and we got to see all the pros and wlite age groupers come FLYING in from the beach to their racks, then run out to with their bikes. I was wishing I had my camera with me.

I know traffic was definitely screwed up. On top of it, the ramp from 10W to 405S was closed by Caltrans, which made getting from downtown back to Marina Del Rey a pain.

My brother-in-law did. I'll have to call him and my sister up to see how he did and what kind of pics they got.

Traffic was really screwed up and pissed many people off, myself included. There was a complete lack of signing on the closed and controlled streets warning about the event, unlike the Acura LA bike tour which has big CalTrans signs warning of closures for days (if not a couple of weeks) before hand. When the average motorist sees things like this caused by people riding bikes, it makes me very afraid to ride through the effected area. Some people actually do work on Sundays and when a consistently 25 minute commute is delayed by 20 minutes, it is really going to piss people off.
When my coworkers got into work, they vented in my direction of course. At least I had the defense that they weren't cyclists, they were triathletes.

Well, if it's not the triathletes, it's the movie guys. They've got a stretch of Highland Ave shut down for for 3 days now...
