We're planning a casual trip from Green River Road to Newport Beach on the SART. We plan to stay in NB overnight. What's the situation with leaving a car overnight at Green River Road? Bad idea? I replaced my old vehicle with a beater since I started bike commuting, so there's nothing particularly worth stealing out of it. Just curious to know if anyone's had problems or has any insights about the area.

As always, don't leave anything in view that is worth stealing. otherwise, I'd say that your chance are about the same as anywere else in Corona. One thing I like to do if I'm nervous about my car getting stolen is to park in residential neighborhoods so there are more people "watching" the car. (pick a neighborhood that doesn't look like car theives live there. - there are some decent neighborhoods around there.)

Don't do it. At least not in the dirt parking lot. I've parked there several times in the morning only to see fresh broken glass in the lot. Its probably safe up the hill at the gas station though (if they dont tow it).

There have been many reports of break ins at the dirt lot. Some people I know have had homeless break into the tool boxes on their truck. Even stole the guy's 2 day old sandwich. So if you see a sick homeless dude running around, prolly the guilty party!

Last time we rode there we parked up a the Jack in the box. Street doesn't look too bad.
Also a Carl Jr's there. Maybe leave the car in that lot?

I've seen it happen at Fiesta Island's lot. Two women who got there the same time I did to go running. When we all came back to the parking lot, my van didn't have any damage, their cars had broken windows and purses were gone. I'm weary about leaving cars anywhere after having 1 stolen, and the current one attempted to be stolen 3 times now.

Really Bad Idea. I stopped parking there even during the day when a couple of years ago I got back to my car and the police were writing out a report for someone that had a break in. The officer said it was a very common occurence. People come through the fence break into the car and then they're gone back into the brush. You might try the shopping center further up Green River on the other side of the freeway. That might be better. Or better yet maybe park in one of the neighborhoods on the other side.

I see you are in Riverside. I don't know what part of town you live in but maybe you want to think about riding directly from home. I live in the C.Crest area and it is only 57 miles one way to the end of SART.

Thanks for the insights. I was worried that people might have seen broken glass in the mornings or something like that, which would indicate big problems. Obviously from the responses, there have been big problems. I'm going to just find someone to drive the truck there for me and drop us off.

Jeff262: if it were all regular riders riding, I'd leave from home -- in fact, I'd really prefer to do so. But we're taking a leisurely cruise / mini-vacation as my birthday present So we have to work with the least common denominator and there are a couple who don't really ride. Thirty miles is pushing pretty far for them. I was thinking of just riding from home myself, but that's not exactly the social solution to the distance problem. Since we're just riding from Green River, I figure I'll take the Single Speed and have a blast while I get the workout I crave.
