Ad Hoc Chantry Century - Sunday, October 21st

RIDE NOT HAPPENING FROM GRIFFITH PARK

Sorry, guys, I messed up and wrote in another thread that I was going to postpone this ride. As it is a small group of us are riding from the Rose Bowl, out to GMR, back and up Chantry Flats, back to the RB, up into the canyons. The ride is going to include a minimum of 7,000 ft of climbing.

If you are still interested, please PM me for start location and time.

Date: Sunday, October 21st
Meet: 7:00am-7:15am
Location: Griffith Park Zoo Lot, Under S
Roll: 7:30am
Distance: 100+ (no less than 100, but no more than 110 )
Elevation Gain: TBD (but no less than 5,000)
Difficulty Level: Intermediate. Skills: Able to maintain 17-18 mph (solo) on flats comfortably, up to 7000 feet of climbing, including steeper grades. Should be comfortable on a self-supported ride. More advanced technical and defensive skills. Ride will be in some remote areas.
Hilly: 50-100 miles
Lunch: TBD in Toluca Lake

ROUTE SLIP: To come…

This month, I’m going to have a hard time getting a century in, so I’m making up my own and already enlisted two great riders. It will Start in Griffith Park, head over to the Rose Bowl and surrounding canyons, up and out through Pasadena to Chantry Flats (as in, we will climb on up it). We will then head back and have one last loop through Griffith Park, up to the Observatory and back down to finish. There will be at least four planned stops along the way to buy water and I will be utilizing the safest, widest roads through all sections of the valley. This is an urban ride and a NO DROP ride.

This ride is also completely unsupported. There will be no SAG available.

I will have a route slip and better idea of the elevation gain soon. I’m just putting this out so that those of you interested may plan to join.

GOING THE DISTANCE:
Happytime
Jschen
Merider1
Ronjon10
Thomson

GOING SOME OF THE DISTANCE:
Grrlyrida

MAYBES:
Spingineer
Vancemac

CONFUSED:
Indolent58

I did something similar last Sunday but started in Silverlake up through Chevy Chase across Lida through Pas and Sierra Madre and up Chantry Flats. I came back through Altadena Drive, Woodbury and back down Chevy Chase to Silverlake. I could only get 55 miles out of the ride. I didn't dare go to Griffith Park. That's going to be the killer portion of your ride. Phew. I don't think I'm strong enough yet to do the last Griffith Park portion, but maybe I can start with you guys and drop off and go to Silverlake on the way back from Chantry?

Damn, I'm in town that weekend, but not sure if I can break away for this. This is the same weekend as my cousin's wedding, so we'll have to see. Make me a mahhhhhhhhhhbeeeeeeeeeeee .... and a very slim likelihood too.

Vanessa, you are welcome on any part of this ride. And you may surprise yourself! GP, although not easy, is less of a climb than Chantry Flats.

Smackdown on the 21st! I'll be setting the odds tomorrow... taking all bets for the BF version of riggs vs. billie jean!

The way I've been riding in that past couple of weeks, that wouldn't surprise me at all. I was just assuming I'd be out of my recent funk, not that I'm doing anything to get out of it other than eating more than I should be. You know, to help my legs rebuild themselves Augh.

Hi M.E. could you put me down as a yes. I don't know how Mt. Hollywood closing will effect this ride. Is it still a go?

Great Vanessa, I'd love you to join. And yes, this IS going to effect the ride. Grumble, grumble. But I will simply add more to the Rose Bowl area (which means more climbing in those canyons), and I will also probably tag on a Dodgers way climb up and back. I'll have to figure it out. OR, I could have us all start from Encanto Park, head over to the Rose Bowl, back to Chantry, up it, and then back to Encanto.

Hmmmm.....that's a possibility.
