    Getting Pulled Over While Riding

Okay I need to vent. I have never been arrested before in my life. I am 31 years old. I have gotten one moving violation in 16 years of driving which happened when I was 17 yrs old. The last time I got pulled over while driving was in Sept of 2000. I am a pretty damn law abiding person. So what really bugs me is how many times I have been pulled over while riding my bike. In the last 7 years I would estimate that I have been stopped and questioned at least 9 times by the police. The first time was in Rancho Palos Verdes when I was living up there. I had just returned from 2 months in China and I was still on Chinese time so I went for a ride at 1am. I wasnt more than 25 yards from my house before I was literally rushed by two cops and handcuffed. The reason they pulled me over ........"we had a robbery in the area". Since I didnt have my ID on me I sat in handcuffs for 20 minutes..."for my protection". They finally let me go when they ran out of BS excuses to search me for drugs, guns or child porn. The following time I got pulled over was in Marina Del Ray ON THE BIKE PATH !! The officer asked my name and when I answered he said "oh sorry, I thought you were someone else" and then he left. Literally 15 seconds. The next 3 were all in south torrance where I now live and the reasons for them pulling me over were laughable. Two were for riding my bike on a sidewalk. Never was I cited or ticketed. But now comes the good part.....Last week there was an armed robbery down my street. The suspect was a shaved head hispanic gang member with tattoos on his neck. My block was shut down and a helicopter circled for an hour. They didnt find the guy. I went out for a ride at 8:30 pm after they left and sure enough on my way back home on Newton St I am riding in the street WITH MY LIGHT ON and helmet and a cop car comes sreaming up behind me and cuts me off and the cops jump out at *** point. After being handcuffed they frisk me and ask my name. I asked them why I was pulled over and they said I "matched a description of an armed robbery suspect from that night". I knew that was complete BS since I personally asked the police that night who they were looking for. The next day in the Dailey Breeze they had an article on it.... Hispanic male, shaved head, gang member and tattoos on the neck. I am white, long hair and no tattoos. Then the cop changed his reason and said that I "jumped a curb into the street". So then they let me go.
Now tonight I am out riding and guess what...I am riding up Anza and Torrance PD pulls alongside and start questioning me. Two seconds into it the cop says "oh sorry, you arent who we thought you were". I said "good, see ya". He yelled at me to come back and after 10 minutes of giving his my information he let me go...WITH A WARNING !! The warning was...."becareful when you are riding".
Anyone who knows me knows I am almost 100% pro-law enforcement but I am sick and tired of getting pulled over on my bike for nothing. When I ride now I am literally paranoid about being pulled over.
Also, I decided if I ever get into a life of crime that I will always use a car and not a bike because cops just leave me alone in my car.
    Okay, rant over. *UNPICUDYP*(Y&USOIHWPIUYDpw*ydp*(y

I've never ever heard of your predicament, SF, and don't know why they come at you unless it's just bad luck. The areas you are riding in do not sound so safe, quite frankly, so maybe it's just the area, but I agree that the police sound out of line!

I'm really surprised you're a white boy. You sound plain unlucky. You ride a lot at night? Maybe that's part of it.

This is interesting. Maybe you should post to the Commuting Forum, also, where riders are on the street more.

You count that as getting pulled over?

I understand there is a constant APB for this chick in Torrance. They plaster her face on everything in town.

    ^^^ funny stuff Jim.

Anyway, SunFlower, I'm sorry you have to go through this but you must fit a certain physical profile for them to do this. I've never been inconvenienced by the police while riding, and I've been out at weird hours.

Oh wait there was that thread with pictures of you with the cops...

I never get hassled. White middle-aged women are never suspected of doing anything interesting.

I've lived in Torrance my whole life, except for a 13 year military service. Don't need to piss you off even more, but I've never had a problem.

I think Torrance PD just like some people. I know they like my brother cause he cannot even breathe in the city without them pulling him over it doesn't matter walking, driving or riding he's going to get it.

So, maybe you two look the same.

No way South Torrance has got to be one of the safest areas in the southbay.

I'm in agreement the police are out of line.

I would think that if I was pulled over 9 times on my bike then I would have been cited at least once. I have never been cited. To me this feels like the police inventing reasons to stop and question people and then wait for the person to give a conflicting answer and then the search begins and so on. Tonight I rode on the bike path and now I am wondering if I would rather deal with the police on the street or the dangerous people on the bike path, lol.
In the end I would rather the police pulled over more people rather than less people because I like having a relatively safe neighboorhood to ride in. I just feel that cycling is such a fun time for me that the police are starting to ruin it.

Next time tell the police you've been pulled over so many times for no apparent reason and ask him why you were pulled over this time instead of the other guy on a bike that just passed by. You must exhibit something that attracts them to you. This is too frequent.

you might also find this video useful if you haven't seen it:

some of it won't apply very well since you're on a bike, but some might be useful.

Well, I don't know much about Torrance, but if I were you, I'll consult an attorney, and have him write the Torrance Police Chief a letter of complaint, and the letter should mention all the time you were stopped, and how the cops are impacting your quality of life negatively.

I know an african-american gentleman whose constant harassment by cops did not stop, until he had an attorney write that city's police chief a letter of complaint. All he did was to own and drive an expensive car. And he told me his attorney also attached a picture of his car to the letter.

Life is too short to deal with constant harassment by cops or anybody else, for that matter.

    Regards,
    Regards,

    Jed

There might be something very specific about how your dress/look/demeanor for this to happen so often. The next time you are stopped make sure that you ask very specific questions as to why you are being pulled over. That may help the police realize that you are not a person of interest... In fact, offer to meet the police officers at the station (at a later time) so that you can get to know some of them. Once they know you they will only pull you over to casually talk and notify you of imminent danger...
Women think they're so clever because they can fake an orgasm for the sake of a relationship, but men can fake a whole relationship for the sake of an orgasm.

Try wearing a reflective safety vest, helmet light, two headlights and three rear blinkies going off in succession.

You probably look too "stealth" for their way of thinking.

well i am thinking of changing my attire to a white wife beater t-shirt, grey baggy and sagging pants with my under wear showing and a gold chain. maybe that would make me look less suspicious.
i am also going to start wearing a sign on my bike that says "this rider carries less than 1 gram of pot on his person"
