Traveling to Palm Springs this Week

Hi y'all I'm traveling to Palm Springs this week with the fam. I've never been before and don't really have a great idea what to expect, what I do know is the area is famous for golfing, shopping and hiking. I'll probably end up hitting a few balls with dad, but none of us are into shopping. Hiking is definitely in the works, but I would like to ride. I've looked at a couple sites for bike rentals, but most of them appear geared towards the corporate crowd and I haven't found too much info on biking the region. I would like to give mountain biking a shot as here in Chicago there isn't a whole lot of opportunity to do so, and I would like ride a bike around town just to enjoy the change in climate (though I'm not sure how bike-friendly Palm Springs is). If anyone has any bike related suggestions they would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Palm Springs (and most of the surrounding area) is pretty bike friendly and bike lanes are on most streets. I know that a couple of shops offer bike rentals, but make sure that you get a reservation as this is the start of the busy time of year for them out there.

Mountain biking out there is strange, the terrain is very desolate and there are tons of thorns. Take extra tubes/patch kit and make sure that the shop knows you are planning on hitting the trails so that they put good tires and possibly a tire liner on for you... Good trails include the Goat Trails which are on the south side of town. very technical and strenuous... but I have heard they are well worth it. Check with the local shops for route maps.

Palm Springs Cyclery has maps and info about local rides. Don't know if they have rentals though.

Tri-a-Bike, in Palm Desert, does have rentals, both road and mountain bikes.

The Desert Bicycle Club generally meets in Palm Desert and has several rides during the week.

Have a good time. The weather should be great here this week! :)
