Bagel Ride Report

Great ride! Nice little ride up to Goldstein's in La Canada (close to Montrose). The weather in the morning ... burrrrr ... cold .... get the picture? Il Bruto is a great ride leader, and thanks to ME for posting this. Looks like this will be a regular routine? There is talk of the next one being up La Tuna Canyon. That would be cool.

ME took most of the pics, but here are a few I took at the ride start.

Thanks for putting this together, M.E. I had a fun time even though some of us got off the route. Good thing for us Mike knew his way back!

Thanks to all of you wonderful BFers who showed up today and met Alan and the others, braving the cold elements – Happytime, Jpconrad, TomBunn, Scootcore, Turtle1 (we had a “newbie” join us – cute, cute, cute), Big John, Justme, Spingineer, Mary and Joe. I really appreciate you coming out for this ride.

And, thank you, Il Bruto!!! So happy to have reconnected with you and the boys (Patrick, Rick, MikeW, & MikeOC). I missed you guys and the bagel ride. Glorious weather albeit cold today. I've been moaning and groaning about missing mojo, well I realized today, I've just been missing the F in fun with my riding. I've had "UN" for so long . Not anymore!!!! Can't wait for more bagel rides.

Pics to follow!

Hey guys, thanx. Good time had by all, thanx to Alan and M.E. for combining their efforts.

Hit some pretty good gusts down Foothill Blvd. through LaCrescenta this morning, but the wind completely disappeared by the time I got to the arroyo. However, the return trip home confirmed that the wind still blows. Sunny, and one of those fantastically clear days. Great day for this ride. Thanx again everyone.

BTW, I think it was Mary that sufferd a broken rear hub on leaving Goldsteins. FWIW, it was one of John Neugent's wheels (Neuvation), and Mary said it was the 2nd time. I happen to have a set of John's wheels, and haven't experienced the problem, but if anyone else has, it might be worth droping John an e-mail on the subject.

Oh, Gene, I'm sorry. I was so excited that this was a no drop ride, yet I didn't know this had happened to Mary. Ron stopped in the residential streets to wait for her and when she didn't appear after awhile, he assumed she and Joe had taken a more direct route back (i.e. the way we came). Sorry to hear about her hub.

Sorry ME. Joe found BigJohn and me at a stop and told us what happened to Mary. After Joe took off to help her, Patrick, John, Mike and I continued on by ourselves. We didn't know JP had a flat so assumed you guys took an alternate hill route you had mentioned. Since we didn't see you til after the ride, we couldn't tell you what happened to Joe and Mary.

John is great on backing his wheels, he will replace them, I actually went through 3 of the rear wheels, it is a problem with the flange. on the drive side. I assume that she has the M28 Aeros. The last time since I didn't have any faith in the rear wheels, anymore, I asked John if I could upgrade to the R28 Aeros for the cost difference and John accomadated me on that upgrade. I have had no problems with the new wheels. The flanges on the drive side are built differently and are stronger, shouldn't be a problem. By the way I checked the website, and it appears he is now incorporating that design on the M28s, so she may not need to upgrade. Just me sure the drive side flanges are solid and not tabs like on the front wheels.

I should have gone riding with BF gang today, I did Bicycle John's Christmas Toys for Tot ride today out of Acton. It was 38° at the start with a 15-20 mph tailwind all the way to Santa Clarita, then on the way back we rode about 26 miles in to the same wind (now a headwind) with about 3500 ft if climbing. The temperature never got above 47 the whole time. My legs are hurt more than they did after 12000 ft of climbing on Breathless Agony.

. . . .
Thanx for the insight. I didn't take notice of the model, but it was, in fact, the drive side, and yes, I have always heard good things about John's willingness to accomodate any problems with his product. I have the R28 SL3 wheels, so that probably accounts for the lack of any problems, per your discription, but the info may be very beneficial to Mary since she said this was the 2nd time. It sounds like John is aware of, and has rectified the condition.
