L.A.'s Bicycle Master Plan
Hi, all. Although I have kept myself out of the mix here up 'til now, I wanted to jump in to alert everyone to something that I think is pretty important.
As some of you may already know, the City of Los Angeles is in the process of reworking its outdated Bicycle Master Plan, and is holding a series of four meetings, scattered sparsely across the area, in order to get public input. www.labikeplan.org
The first meeting is taking place in Exposition Park, and is, unfortunately, the only one to be located anywhere near Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park and Downtown - all places where I have seen a considerable increase in cyclists over the past few years.
In the interest of getting more people out to the meeting, I decided to host a ride. If you'd like to come with us, we'll be gathering at the Vermont & Santa Monica Red Line Station on Feb. 16th, between 8:45 and 9:00 am. More details can be found here: Exposition Expedition
There are three other meetings happening, of course, and there's another ride planned for the Santa Monica meeting on Wednesday the 20th. If you have any concerns about the bicycle facilities being devised for L.A., I'd encourage you to attend whichever meeting is most convenient.

I'm going to the Van Nuys meeting. I'm going to try and get out to take pictures of areas that are of major concern to cyclists, such as bike lanes ending abruptly and unmaintained or uncleaned lanes. I'm also going to try to get pictures of areas where there are no bike lanes, and where there are hazards for riders.

Thanks for the welcome, merider1!
Another thing people can do, even those that can't make a meeting, is to submit you best (and worst) cycling routes to the Bicycle Master Plan by submitting them to bikely.com. This page tells you how to go about it.
It's actually very useful to search for local routes on the site, as you can see what streets cyclists are favoring in your area.

Thanks for posting this. I will be at the Santa Monica meeting on the 20th. There was a thread already started here somewhere about these meetings.....

I apologize for missing that earlier thread. I did want to alert everyone to the rides heading to the meetings, though, so in a way it's a slightly different topic... sort of.
Looks like the Santa Monica meeting is shaping up be the major event of the four.

I know there's a lot of cyclists in the Valley Cities as well! Who's planning on showing up to the Van Nuy's Meeting?

These threads go by like a conveyer belt...no worry. I like that so many people speak out.
I'd go tomorrow but I decided to do the Memorial Ride...so many things to do that are all valuable in their own right.

TONIGHT
"Storm The Bastille!" - The Bicycle Master Plan
02.20.08
Wednesday
START TIME: 6:30pm
The opportunity is ours!
The LA City Department of Planning and the LA City Department of Transportation are conducting mandated community workshops in order to update the Bicycle Master Plan.
It is imperative that the cycling community show up and weigh in so that the Bicycle Master Plan reflects standards and policies that make sense FOR THE CYCLING COMMUNITY!
If you care about Bike Boulevards, Sharrows, traffic calming, street maintenance standards, wayfinding, street design that make sense for cyclists, peds, mass transit and motorist alike, now is our chance to show up in force and codify the policies and standards that will make LA an even better place to ride.
There are four workshops scheduled. We ride, full force from around the city, to the second workshop.
West Los Angeles
Date: Wednesday February 20, 2008
Location: Felicia Mahood Multi Purpose Center
Address: 11338 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90037
Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm
Westsiders, you're already there! Meet at BikeRoWave at 6pm and ride at 6:15 to the workshop.
Eastsiders and Hollywood, we leave the Santa Monica & Vermont Red Line Station at 5:15 pm.
Valley? Downtown? Pedro? NELA?
Sound off, set a meeting place, converge on the Bicycle Master Plan Workshop and lets raise the standard!
After the workshop we ride to the BikeRoWave Theater for a movie screening.

Just rode back from the meeting on one of those "Bike Routes" that aren't really very bike friendly we talked about at the meeting.
Thanks to all of the LACBC, City and LADOT planners who came out to hear our comments and ideas.
