Update on Sierre Madre for those riding GMR from Encanto

Guys, I rode GMR a couple of weeks ago with Ronjon and he showed me the streets that are now finished that you can take to avoid the torn up Sierre Madre section. In fact, I think that Sierre Madre as it used to be will be no more! I can't remember how to do it or the names of the streets, but I'm going to Google Earth it to see if I can produce a map. It's a great way to go. The roads are new, wide and quiet (new houses) and it adds a touch of climbing on the way out, and a little downhill breather at the end of the ride.

Forgive me if this has already been reported somewhere!

Is it even in Google Earth, yet? Redal had given me the directions a couple months ago and I added in the street names when I rode it.

No, not yet. Which is why I hadn't posted anything as I was fiddling around with GE. But I love it anyway. I love how you can zoom in and all.

I'm bored.

I don't feel well.

And I don't have anyone to ride with.

But my apartment is getting straightened up...just slowly and between posting.

You'd feel better if you went out for a ride.

You don't have to ride with someone, just ride.

Yeah, I think I'm going to only on the Red Baron and just a short one. I'm changing some travel details at present. As soon as I do that, I'm going to go.

I've been working today too. Sick days are never really sick days for me.

Sick days should only be taken when you're on death's door, or when you have something fun to do, any other time you should go into the office and share your germs with everyone, at least that's the way it was the last time I worked in an office!

For once, I thought of my coworkers. Okay, I'm going to go do a little ride, something for exercise. I just took a tiny nap.

You need an iphone. You can do that wherever you are... it's handy!

So you took a sick day, and wasn't even sick? What's up with that?

I took a sick day because I had to. No way I could have lasted 1 hour at work today. What was so disgusting was that the sun was bleeding through my blinds. Life's not fair sometimes.

I beg your pardon. I am sick, Ron. I think I have a touch of the flu.

Sorry, from reading your other post, it looked like you weren't.

Must be a virus going around. I must have caught it Sunday. I took a short spin Sunday morning, and noticed it was pretty windy. I could only go for a short 5 miler, since I was on-call. That's the only thing I can think of. Since I was on-call, I could not interact with many people. All I know is I felt really miserable Monday, and worked through after lunch, then went home. I hope this thing passes before Saturday. I planned a birthday ride (present to myself), and it would sure suck to miss that.

Thank you. Since constructionn began, I had been going down to busy Foothill blvd and traveling around Citrus college then making my way up Barranca or Lorraine. Whenever my nerves weren't up to the task of dealing with the automobiles, I would just drive to Sierra Madre and park in the Elementary school.

This works great. I saw several riders taking the same route today.

Just a note: 13th Street after it turns southward becomes Pasadena Ave.

There were lots of Sports motorbikes up there, but I saw two Sheriffs deputies patrolling so for the most part, the motorbikes were behaved and rode at reasonable speeds.

Thanks!

When did you take that picture? I got poured on coming up GMR from East Fork. It was dry for the descent but very dark and grey. When we got back into Glendora it was raining again and I got hailed on before I got home.

I started climbing GMR around 9:30am. It was actually cool and in some places warm. Skies were cloudy with some clearing and visibility was somewhere around 5-10 miles. Blue skies were prevalent during the late morning hours but I could still see across the valley.

Weather turned bad around 1:00pm when winds picked up. Then it turned dark with lightning around 2:00pm when hail and sleet began falling in the San Gabriel Valley. By that time, I was already off the mountain and heading homeward. That storm front quickly moved eastward as I was running errands later in the day. Around 3:00pm, that darkness was hovering over Glendora and I was glad I was already inside.

Sorry you got caught in it.

Yesterday? Did you get the hail yesterday? I guess the canyons were not the place to be!

Yes. I was at the top of the bike trail about 12:00 and getting to the bottom of GMR on the Glendora side a little before 2:00. The hail was actually on my way home riding down Lone Hill Ave. between Glendora and San Dimas. At the intersection of GRR/GMR, I saw a friend heading towards Baldy. He told me yesterday that he got snowed on.

Hi! I've been reading posts in this forum for quite a while.
I'm relatively a newbie and have been to GMR twice.
Seems that you guys park at encanto then go to GMR thru Sierra Madre. May I know the exact, detailed route? Is this the best place to park and eventually warm up before climbing GMR?
