Well, for my first attempt at a competitive eating contest i think i did pretty well. i took 7th place out of 30 contestants. I hadn't trained at all and was unsure of what to do the day of the event. After much thought i know what i did wrong today and can't wait until next year.

Seriously? If so, we need more details.

It was a blast. The contest is held at Ichiban japanese restaurant in Hillcrest every year in May. Its their anniversary party sort of. Today was year 27. I know what i did today that slowed me down and i had no practice beforehand...so if you guys want to come up against me next year you are going to have to bring your A game. I was bummed that i was so close to the final round. The guy that beat me swallowed his last bite about half a second before me. But i don't think 7th place out of 30 people is to bad for my first attempt. Not bad for a 140lb. 23 year old at least

The contest happens every may (annual contest) and i believe registration begins at the beginning of the month and ends on the 11th. It is $15 to register and totally worth it. Most fun i've had competeing in a long time. I will post it up again next year a little earlier so more people can try and sign up for it.

If you really want to hit the sushi hard (for a small price) head to the Todai Restaurant in HB at Beach and Warner.
While it's hardly the best of sushi fare, it is...ALL YOU CAN EAT format. Cafeteria style dining: pay your money, find a seat, order drinks, get a tray and head up to the bar. Desserts included.

Another good place is Cabin Sushi in downtown riverside. $20 for 1 hour of all you can eat sushi which i am never going to do again...
I don't like it when i eat so much it hurts for the next 24 hours.
Otherwise they've got good stuff.

How is the quality? By the way have you ever tried Kura Sushi in Costa Mesa?
P.S. Is this the place? https://www.todai.com/index_usa.html
They have one in Orange, but don't list Huntington Beach location.

Sushi Cruise in Claremont is good. $25 gets you three orders. You can order as much as you want each time but you can't place your 2nd or 3rd order until you have finished your previous order. I can eat alot but me, my wife, a buddy and his girlfriend could only get through two orders. We ordered about eight different things both times. I'm not a sushi fanatic but the quality and taste were good to me. I've eaten at Todai also. To me Sushi Cruise was much better and fresher. They don't make it until you order it.

Damnit I hate you. I love sushi and all you can eat buffet will be my undoing.

We usually go for a birthday blowout with some friends. It's hardly an intimate, sit at the small bar and chat with the chef/owner while your spider roll gets done up, it's just a crazy place.
Location inOrange on your map link? Never been there. And in fact, I haven't been to the HB location in a while - maybe they moved? I'll drive by the HB spot later this week - it's near the Performance shop.
Kura-Sushi? Live a couple blocks away. Funny place with all the food floating by you - can't say I go there often. The fare is a notch or two above a Todai as I remember.
My favorite spot in this area is the fish market in the Marukai Market on Baker/Harbor in CM. The best and the fresh. That place rules.

Sushi is one of those things where I prefer quality over quantity. Went to Todai once with a BF group. The company was great, the food was mediocre at best. I think their company slogan is...
"If you want sushi really bad, we have really bad sushi."
"If you want sushi really bad, we have really bad sushi."

Ok thanks for reviews. I'll stay away from Todai then. I do prefer quality over quantity. Specially when it comes to sushi. I really like Kura Sushi, but I tend to over eat there. I try this I try that, next thing I know I have a stack of plates thats a bit too high.
