Glendora Mtn Road article

There have been 165 serious automobile accidents in 13 years on this road. Consider also that at least three of those thirteen years, the roadway has been closed to automobiles.

Although this is one of my favorite bicycle routes, I've avoided riding this road after experiencing a handful of close calls with speeding motorcycles and teenage F1 wannabes. There is at least one cyclist who was a victim of a hit and run within the past few years.

Most recently, a teenager died as the car she was riding in plunged over the edge and fell down a steep cliff. This article reexamines the purpose of that roadway and if is should be closed. GMR has no destinations, just windy roads and beautiful mountain views.

https://www.sgvtribune.com/news/ci_9661305?source=email

My friend discussed this issue with an LA Sheriff and the deputy could give no reasonable answer to keep it open to traffic. He preferred it to remain closed.

What do you think?

If it's closed to cars, that means no more road maintenance so, eventually, it will be unrideable for road bikes as well.

It would be sad if Glendora Mountain Road is closed, because this is one on the toughest and fun road ride there is. It is challenging, grueling and very scenic. In fact if you ride it to the end where the road will take you to Mt. Baldy where there is a nice little place to stop and have lunch.

I've ridden GMR over 100 times, mostly from Glendora all the way to Baldy Village and back, and while I've seen quite a few automobiles and motorcycles on that road, I've never had a problem with unsafe drivers or motorcyclists.

I don't doubt that it happens, just as it happens on Angeles Crest or Palomar . . . and sometimes, even for a non-motorcyclists like myself, I can tell which riders are in control and which are (perhaps?) just beginners.

I agree that more enforcement would help; probably on motorcycles would be best. But to close the road would be a huge loss. Yeah, it would be good for awhile, but with no maintenence it would deteriorate (like Hwy 39 between Angeles Crest (2) and Crystal Lake).

My vote would be: keep it open, make it safer if possible, but we don't want to lose GMR!

I'd like to see it closed just cars but stay open for everyone else. Too many drifter wannabes out there that have ruined it for everyone else (even my local car forum things so).

Just leave it there as a backup access road for emergency (i.e. fires preventing access from HWY39 and East Fork). It would only need light maintenance if there aren't any cars. Only if there's fire/rain would you need to do any major work.

It's the stupid ones that worry me the most, especially when I'm on a road bike and he is on a 500lb motorcycle crossing the centerline at 75mph

According to the USFS, it's closed due to fire danger. I don't know if this is accurate, though. I rode it 2 weeks ago and it was open.

The article didn't say it was closed for any reason.

I kinda wish it would close. Highway 39, which is closed now, is one of the best rides I've ever done and the roads are all that great in a few sections. I'd rather have the rough roads than constant traffic. Imagine being able to ride for 3 hours without 1 car...bliss.

I rode Glendora Mountain Road from the East Fork side today and GRR across to Baldy. Neither of the gates on GMR were closed. It may have been closed on the Glendora side but they usually close the top gate if they close the bottom gate.

I'm guessing that is just a troll or a plastered drunk guy. He's even making fun of himself by making his title "roads are for cars" while claiming to be a motorcycle rider and misspelling more words than my English Language Learner students.

He lost all credibility with me when he called a Yamaha a "real man's bike."

All gates were open on Saturday June 21. It was hotter than hell up there -- 106 in Glendora when we came down around 1:00pm.

/\ Ditto.

I've been impatiently waiting since fire broke out at Baldy to get my "freddy" little brother out there.

He knows little about cycling but he's a fast learner, has a taller (than me) mean body (been working out +15 yrs) as a matter of fact I was very surprised that he could finish 60 miles the first try. Four rides later we are doing 80+ miles! I'm still faster but I guess that's about to change soon.

"One of the Roadies Rules is to say Hi only to other roadies" I had told him, because he's such a good spirited dude, he gets really excited w/happiness -like a frigg kid- when others roadies acknowledge us on PCH

He's not even on clipless yet and already wants to take on racing but I love him, he's still my little bro.
