Is riding fun? I don't classify it in the same category as "Weee!" fun. It's more of a "Catholic" type of fun. I can't explain it. I like the social aspect of cycling. The immediate recognition from some else who rides that you suffer from the same condition. And that they may be others in the world who might understand.
post the pic, yo!

I ride because it is fun... but saving a few gallons of gas is a worthwhile endeavor that is a cool byproduct of something that I would happily do anyway.

Ultimately, I believe that until the American populace utilizes the many other means of creating energy we will remain influenced by a select group of a few people that might not have our best interests in mind. I wouldn't mind leasing our natural resources to the highest bidder in exchange for reduced taxes and equivalent social programs, but only as long as I can still swim in the ocean without getting covered with toxic goo.

just a "noob" posting his 2¢ here...

I started riding to save on gas...now I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I love riding...the rush of air, the view of the city, watching all the faces watch me whiz by...its great.

but...alas I got sick over the weekend and wasn't able to ride home today...hopefully I'll be feeling well enough to ride home tomorrow.

Ok, here's the real reason for this thread in the first place. In a way it was done just to get some of you all wound up, just like it did (scooter and the tinman especially, though I surely didn't target you). What I was trying to show was that not everyone, or even a majority of people here believe in the same things you believe in and when you start threads with all kinds of liberal assumptions in them, they can be insulting to others (me) on this forum. I do not believe that humans or the carbon we exhale or big oil or big pharm or big tobacco or whatever your new enemy is, is the problem. I believe in freedom, the freedom that our founding fathers gave us 230 odd years ago and that the unelected courts that have bought into the environmental pseudo science, are taking those freedoms away from us everyday with the scare tactics used by Algore and his ilk.

So the next time you feel the need to espouse your political views with some comment about one of your pet peeves, just try to remember that many others do not agree with you and may take exception with your comments. And if you do feel the need to express yourself in that way, please expect that someone like me might tell you that you're wrong. However, most of the time I just ignore that stuff and log off because I just don't have the time for it, but do know this, it drives some people away that may not be as confrontational as me and this forum may lose good people in the process.

PS I hate the price of gas today also, but I put the blame squarely on the government and not on big oil.

Well, I do ride my bike because it's fun, but I don't care much for the exercise or the competitive juices. I don't bike to save the world, either. I am careful with my fume hood usage at work to help save the world. The thousands of dollars worth of energy per year that saves does far more than anything I might or might not do on a bike.

I guess I'm just a conservative with left wing hobbies. I ride a road bike and do woodworking, both of which seem to draw an unusual number of environmentalists wackos...you know, save the rain forests, save the world from greenhouse gasses and save the cheerleader...save the world. Well maybe not the last one, but you know what I mean, then again, maybe not. When everyone is into Newspeak and it's a thought crime to even speak out about the religion of the left, some forget that there are other views out there, like the other half of the country thinks.

Go ahead, I can take it.
i ride my bike because i've always loved riding a bike. i do it because it's fun, i want to save money on gas, and hopefully loose some weight while i'm at it. "but wait! there's more!" saving the world is just an added bonus

by the way i LOVE your heroes reference.

That's cool tin man, and really shows your devotion (and tells me a lot about you). Would you be so kind as to do me a favor? If you EVER see me at any event with Algore, please, please, please end my life ASAP.

PS If I'm ever caught in the same frame as Algore, I just hope that I'm as clear as you are in that picture.

I find it reprehensible to refer to people who care about our environment, our children's futures, the quality of our resources, as whackos!
