Is it true any tickets you get cycling is just as if you were driving a car? (i.e. same weight, same penalty, same traffic school)

I think it depends what city tickets you.

Condorita 07-14-08 08:57 AM

Unless you have a Class 1 license. Then it's No Traffic School For You.

wcoastbikr 07-14-08 09:53 AM

Was it near knob Hill where you got pulled over? I saw someone getting written a ticket on Knob hill yesterday.

I've heard horrors of Redondo Beach police and stop signs and riding on the strand at the pier where you're supposed to walk. They're very nit picky with bikers obeying laws.

SunFlower 07-14-08 10:49 AM

i never ride through redondo beach streets, especially on weekends. i ride on the bike path. RB police target the expensive bike/spandex/helmet guys and ignores the shaved headed gang members riding and drinking all over their city.

Can you avoid an impact on your driving record by using your passport as ID? I'm not required to have a drivers license to ride a bike, am I?

Socalcycling 07-14-08 12:40 PM

nope but you are required to carry a government issued ID

Umm... no you aren't. You can not be required to carry I.D., though they can detain you until they determine who you are if they so please.

Incorrect.

Yup, they do it every summer, it's for our "safety." They put up electronic signs leading into the summer warning of their increased enforcement period. I live up near Calle Mayor/PV Drive, so I finish many rides coming south through Redondo, and NEVER ride the Esplanade on a Sat/Sun - unless I am willing to unclip and put one foot down. I use Catalina instead, has stop signs, but isn't patrolled nearly as heavily as Esplanade (in fact, never seen a cyclist getting a ticket there).

Oh, and riding through the "walk your bike" pier section is, I heard, something like $175. Anyone riding the bike path on a weekend in the summer has a death wish anyway

JTGraphics 07-14-08 09:55 PM

This is were we come down from PV we didn't get stopped but saw two others on the other side of the street get pulled over after running south bound stop sign on Esplanade & C street 2 bike cops waiting around corner on C street curb. We then turned up to Catalina north bound and at A street 4 bike cops sitting on the south west sidewalk about 20 yards from the corner waiting.
And in most cases when ticketed while cycling is a moving violation, same as driving a car unless your stopped for a non moving violation situation of some sort.

wcoastbikr 07-14-08 10:57 PM

I stay on the strand in Redondo beach...way too many cops especially on Esplanade. I normally only go out on the street towards Torrance beach on my way up to PV, where I take Paseo de la playa up to Palos Verdes Drive W.

SunFlower 07-15-08 10:20 AM

On monday I saw a motorcycle cop ticketing cyclists on Harbor drive by the Cheesecake factory. He was waiting for cyclists to run the red light on the street that goes into the marina area. I saw him tickets about 5 people. The best was two elderly ladies on beach cruisers.
Its the same light where I got a ticket on my rollerblades when I was 13 yrs old. When the cop was getting my information he asked if I had any warrants. Gotta love RBPD

It's that time of year to make easy money for the city coffers. Redondo Beach isn't the only city enforcing existing laws to balance the budget. Find ticketing the elderly on cruiser bikes going a bit too far...I mean how fast were they really going? Most of the cruiser bikes near the beach area are traveling a little faster than walking speed for the most part.

I believe they got ticketed for running a stop sign or red light. :(

Getting a failure-to-stop ticket on a bike is an easy problem to prevent. Just stop, touch a foot down, and go.

It's fun to wave to the cops when you do this, they usually wave back.

Just smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave.

:)

wcoastbikr 07-15-08 10:41 PM

Is it necessary that you touch the ground with your foot? Because I was on esplanade turning up to knob hill, I stopped and balanced without getting off the pedals and let the motorcycle cop go and I turned left after he passed. Or is it a preference thing with the cops? What does the law state require you to do?

Iamkar33m 07-15-08 11:32 PM

Law requires you to come to a COMPLETE stop... wheels must stop spinning completely. If you can balance yourself and maintain no forward motion, then kudos to you. Most people will more than likely have to put their foot down to keep from falling to one side or the other.
